The fire ant – small, invasive and burning • What to do in case of a sting

(haipo) The small fire ant may seem insignificant at first glance, but it is one of the most dangerous invasive species to have arrived in Israel in recent decades. It is no more than a few millimeters in size, but its bite is extremely stinging, it can cause severe allergic reactions, harms animals, agriculture and ecosystems, and continues to spread throughout the country.

In recent years, more and more residents have reported encounters with fire ants in private gardens, parks, public areas, and even inside homes. Experts warn that without awareness and proper treatment, the invasive species will continue to expand and cause significant damage.

A small invader with big damage

The small fire ant, originally from South America, has spread to many countries around the world through international trade in trees, seedlings, flowerpots, soil, and gardening materials. It was discovered in Israel in the early 2000s, and has since continued to expand into urban areas, residential neighborhoods, private gardens, agricultural areas, and parks. Its spread is made possible primarily by moving flowerpots, wood chips, prunings, soil, and mulching materials from place to place, sometimes without the public even being aware that the nests are hidden within them.

How do you identify a fire ant?

Despite its intimidating name, the little fire ant is an extremely tiny insect, measuring only one to one and a half millimeters long, while the queen is about two millimeters long. It is a bright reddish-orange in color, and it usually moves in organized convoys and large colonies. The ant's nests can be found in moist soil, in gardens, between stones, inside flower pots, under piles of prunings, and on top of trees. During the summer months, it often enters homes, mainly in search of sources of water, moisture, and food, so it can be encountered in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where there is high humidity.

Small sting – big pain

The main reason for fear of the small fire ant is its stinging bite. When it feels threatened, it clings to the skin and injects venom that causes sharp pain and a severe burning sensation, sometimes reminiscent of a burn. In many cases, the sting occurs when the ants become trapped between the skin and clothing, but it may also occur while walking barefoot in the garden, sitting on the grass, or coming into contact with vegetation and flowerpots where colonies of the ants are found.

In most cases, the sting causes immediate pain, redness, swelling, and local itching. Some stings may also cause small blisters or pimples that remain on the skin for several days. Although the stings usually resolve without complications, they can be extremely bothersome and painful, and in people who are sensitive to insect venom, they can even cause a significant allergic reaction that requires medical attention.

When can a bite be dangerous?

In most cases, fire ant bites cause pain and burning, but the symptoms resolve within a few days without the need for special treatment. However, people who are sensitive to insect venom may develop a significant allergic reaction, manifested by extensive swelling, a widespread rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness and sometimes even an anaphylactic reaction, a life-threatening medical condition that requires urgent treatment. Children, the elderly and people with known allergies to insect bites are at higher risk of developing serious reactions, so it is important to be alert to any changes in their condition after a bite.

Not just humans

The fire ant is not only a threat to humans. Dogs, cats, farm animals, and wild animals can also be stung many times in a short period of time, especially when they step on a nest or approach a colony. The bites cause intense pain, irritation and skin injuries, and sometimes even infections and impaired ability to move or eat. Furthermore, the fire ant is an invasive species that harms biodiversity, displaces native species of insects and animals, and causes damage to agriculture, vegetation, and ecosystems in Israel.

What to do in case of a bite?

In most cases, the pain and burning sensation can be relieved with simple home treatment. It is recommended to wash the bite area with soap and water, cool the area with ice wrapped in a towel for a few minutes, and apply a soothing ointment or antihistamine as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. It is important to avoid scratching the area to reduce the risk of infection.

However, if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, significant swelling, a widespread rash, a feeling of faintness, or any other sign of a severe allergic reaction appear after the bite, seek medical attention at the nearest medical center without delay. A quick response in such cases may save lives.

How can the spread of fire ants be reduced?

Preventing the spread of fire ants begins with vigilance and taking simple steps. It is recommended to avoid moving soil, pots, prunings, wood chips, and gardening materials from areas where the ants are known to be present, as these may contain nests without being able to be noticed. Before introducing new plants to the garden or home, it is a good idea to inspect them carefully to make sure they are not infected. In addition, maintaining environmental cleanliness, reducing food and moisture sources, and treating garden pests can reduce the chance of new colonies establishing.

When a large fire ant colony is discovered near a house or in a yard, it is recommended not to try to deal with it on your own. Unprofessional treatment may cause the colony to split and accelerate the spread of the ants to additional areas. In such cases, it is recommended to call a certified exterminator, who is familiar with the specific pest control methods for this invasive species and will be able to perform effective and safe treatment.

Far beyond a nuisance

The small fire ant may be tiny in size, but the damage it causes is widespread and significant. Beyond its painful bites and the health risk for people sensitive to insect venom, it is an invasive species that threatens biodiversity, harms pets and wildlife, causes damage to agriculture and green spaces, and continues to spread in many areas of Israel.

Public awareness is one of the most important tools in dealing with the phenomenon. Early identification of the ant, avoiding moving gardening materials from infected areas, reporting to authorities when necessary, and taking precautions can reduce the risk of bites and slow its spread. The more residents who become familiar with its characteristics and ways to deal with it, the less harm it will cause to humans, animals, and the environment as a whole.

  2. I used a product in my yard that you sprinkle on the grass and in the garden pots and it kills the fire ants. Within a few days all the ants were gone! I realized that it is a bait that the ants take to the nest and kill the nest. It is called Volcano.

  3. We have mosquitoes, it's terrible. I'm afraid to go into the shower because they like moisture there. After a bite, I give my son Penstyl drops and ice for local relief.

    • You can exterminate.
There is a pest control specifically for fire ants.
      I also said

  4. Lived in the valley and lived with the ants for a long time, the picture in the article is perhaps a hand that touched the nest.. A random encounter, which is common, would not look like this.. Ice on the bite area helps a lot.. For small children, if they suffer a lot, even painkillers can help.. The ants cause damage to the cornea of domestic animals, cats, dogs, etc. because the ants squirt acid.. Effectively spreading a special granular substance does help a lot and keeps them away for a year or so..

  5. To effectively eliminate the ants, you should spread peanut butter in the yard (they are very attracted to it) in several locations. Within about an hour, the ants will arrive in significant quantities. Then you should spread a pesticide called "granular." The advantage of the granular is that the ants recognize the poison as food and take it to the nest, essentially destroying the entire "family." Good luck.

    • I switched to a substance called Volcano and it works like a charm. You don't need peanut butter, it's just messy, in 24 hours you won't see one move.
It is also important to take care of your neighbors so that they can have peace for a long time,

  6. The Haifa Municipality is in a deep sleep, this ant is already everywhere.
We need to involve the residents, jump every nest and go out in the fight to lead the municipality and eradicate it.

  7. Wash well with soap and water and apply aloe vera gel (it is better to buy a transparent gel, with a high percentage of active ingredients and without green food coloring)

  8. Highly recommend Topgrain! After trying several fire ant solutions, this is the only product that really worked. Easy to spread, the ants were gone in no time and the results were long lasting. An effective solution and highly recommended
