Dr. Gal Zagron, Director of the Pest and Pest Control Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection:
"Not only does the small fire ant sting and hurt humans, it also harms its entire environment. The ant has been defined as one of the worst invasive species in the world and destroys insects and reptiles in its environment. The ant also harms large animals, such as dogs and cats, when it stings them in their eyes and leaves them blind. The office "The Environmental Protection Agency and the Nature and Parks Authority are working together to eradicate invasive species. In public areas where the small fire ant has been detected, the local authority must act to exterminate by spreading pesticide preparations based on granular baits, by a certified exterminator."

Yarin Teitler, inspector of the environmental unit at the Nature and Parks Authority:
"In order for people to be able to continue to spend time in leisure and recreation sites, which include sites adjacent to moist habitats such as: streams, springs, winter pools, and more, and for the purpose of protecting the wild animals found both in zoos and living corners, as well as in the open areas, it is very important to preserve the ecological systems and prevent establishment of invasive species in general and the small fire ant in particular. Education to raise public awareness is very important on these issues."
The days are getting longer and warmer, and many go to the parks and public areas to spend time. It often happens that you get stung in the garden, and you don't know the reason. If you felt a small, stinging sting like a burn, and you couldn't see the cause of the sting, the small fire ant could be the cause.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Nature and Parks Authority, in cooperation with the local authorities, completed an extensive nationwide activity to monitor the small fire ant in public areas. The purpose of the monitoring activity, which lasted two days and included the aforementioned Haifa area, and was actually spread over large areas and encompassed all areas of the country from Kiryat Shmona, through Jerusalem to Yeruham in the south - is to raise public and local authorities' awareness of the presence of the small fire ant in public areas.

Based in public areas
The activity included monitoring nesting sites and the establishment of the small fire ant in public areas - a complementary action to the financial support that the Ministry of Environmental Protection transferred to several authorities throughout the country that were awarded as part of a call, which included support for monitoring, prevention and extermination of the small fire ant. All this in order to help the local authority produce a monitoring, prevention and extermination plan with the professional accompaniment of a pest and extermination team at the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

20 pest and control staff members from the Ministry of Environmental Protection participated in the monitoring activity in the public areas, including pest inspectors from the environmental unit of the Nature and Parks Authority. The team carried out systematic monitoring with the help of dispersal and documentation in an online GIS monitoring system of peanut butter-based baits in the control area entrusted to them. The findings obtained were brought to the attention of the authorities and published for public information.
