(haipo) - In recent times, the Superbus company has witnessed violent attacks against drivers, which in some cases even end in their hospitalization.
Recently, drivers of the "Superbus" company find themselves under threat from violent passengers, who put them in danger and without any ability to defend themselves. Last night (Wednesday 22/11/2022), the company started a strike until 10:00 in the city of Tiberias, in protest of a series of violent incidents towards the bus drivers.
Among these events we can mention two events from the last week - the first is the attack on a bus driver on Monday of this week (21/11/2022) in Tiberias, by a group of boys, in which the driver lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital. The second happened last night (22/11/2022) in Yokneam, when a driver was surrounded after he refused to allow a passenger to get off the bus when he stopped at a red light. It should be noted that the driver acted according to the law, which prohibits dropping off passengers outside the station. The passenger hit the driver who injured his head and sought medical treatment.
As a response to this, the drivers demonstrated last night (Wednesday 22/11/2022) in front of the Tiberias police station, when during the demonstration the coordinator of the trade union "Force for Workers" in the north and another committee member were arrested following clashes with the police.
As we know, assaults on bus drivers are often reported, also in Haifa, as we reported here last August, and also about a month before, and these are just a few examples among many cases. The drivers claim that they do not feel safe in their work comes up again and again and driver demonstrations are often organized with the aim of settling the issue in a way that will deter the attackers.
The organization of the transport committees in 'Power for Workers' stated:
"We are beaten and finally arrested? The police have lost direction. Our claims are basic - it is not possible that time after time drivers complain about the behavior of these boys and nothing is done. This time a driver lost consciousness. What will be the next step? We will not be silent about the harm to the drivers until they are recognized as employees public and punish their attackers accordingly. Not a day goes by without an attack on a driver. There is no escape from shutting down the lines. We call on the Ministry of Transportation to adopt our demand to recognize drivers as public servants and create a deterrent against driver attackers!"
The Superbus company responded:
"The Superbus company condemns any type of violence and accompanies and supports all its employees and drivers. The company's representatives are in contact with all the relevant parties, including the Israel Police, with the aim of bringing the attackers to justice."
