(haipo) The Central Customs Department's Customs Enforcement Unit, in collaboration with the Export Department, is conducting a detailed investigation into the suspected commercial export of Israeli betel leaves to the United States worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The export was allegedly carried out under the guise of a personal export of henna, with false statements made about the contents of the shipments and their value.
Suspect caught at post office while making export
According to the Tax Authority spokeswoman, the arrest request that was filed reveals that the suspect, Jaber Sisai, had been exporting hundreds of shipments of Israeli gat leaves to the United States for a long period of time, through the Israel Post Company. The shipments were made under the guise of personal exports, while declaring that they were for inspection and declaring monetary values lower than the real value of the goods. In addition, analysis of the evidence suggests that the suspect used fictitious sender details, as well as a fictitious residential address and telephone number, in order to disguise his identity and the scope of his activity.
The suspect was released under restrictive conditions – the investigation continues
This week, the suspect was caught at the post office while carrying out the export operation, and was brought for questioning at the offices of the Central Customs' Customs Enforcement Unit. The suspect was later brought before a judge at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court, who decided to release him under restrictive conditions. The investigation into the case continues, as the Tax Authority continues to examine the scope of the commercial activity allegedly carried out under the guise of personal export, and the involvement of additional parties.
