(haipo) - Haifa lifeguards helped a turtle that was caught on a fishing rod hook.
Yesterday (Saturday 26/8/23) in the morning hours, the lifeguards of Station 6 at the "Student Beach" arrived for their work, when they suddenly noticed the fishermen, with one of their rods unusually stretched and bent. After a few seconds, the rescuers spotted a large sea turtle caught in a fishing rod and immediately jumped towards it. After they started to free the turtle from the fishing line, the rescuers suddenly saw that the sharp hook remained embedded in the turtle's tongue.
For fear of endangering the life of the turtle, the rescuers immediately contacted the inspector of the Nature and Parks Authority and the sea turtle rescue center. The rescuers, who in the meantime decided to give the turtle the name "Tartuga", acted in accordance with the inspector's telephone instructions and kept bathers away from him who gathered in the area due to their curiosity.
The rescuers kept the turtle in a cool place until the arrival of the "Sea Turtle Rescue Center" volunteer, where the turtle was brought to continue receiving treatment. The center's workers treated Tartuga with dedication and in a short time managed to pull the hook out of his tongue.
This case joins other cases that occurred recently in which the rescuers provided a quick and dedicated response to save sea turtles that were in distress.

The Nature and Parks Authority emphasizes that if you come across injured sea turtles washed ashore or floating in the sea, you must immediately report them to the RTG hotline - 3639*.
Stay with the turtle until a volunteer/inspector arrives or bring the turtle to the rescue center after reporting. If the turtle is entangled in waste, do not remove the waste and do not release the turtle back into the sea. The turtle must be brought to the rescue center for medical treatment along with the waste, as it is.
