Pigs in Haifa - can they transmit diseases and are you even aware of the risk in public gardens? | Interviews with Dr. Roni Koenig and Yair Luria

A wild boar urinates in the garden of Shmuel and a baby touches the water and puts his hand in his mouth...
This is how one of the (many) scenarios begins, which may end in severe morbidity from a zoonotic disease, when wild animals establish themselves in the urban area...

What are zoonotic diseases?

according to The National Center for Zoonotic Viruses, the term zoonosis is a general name for infectious diseases that exist in animals and are transmitted to humans. Most often, the ways of transmission are by insects, especially mosquitoes, but also by rodents and bats. There are also diseases that are transmitted by contact with body fluids of patients, or by smelling rodent secretions. Transmission through transfusions of blood and its products and transplanted organs is also possible. Some zoonotic viruses exist in Israel and some are imported into Israel by travelers returning from abroad and do not originally exist in Israel.

The wild pigs roam the grasses in Haifa, on the sidewalks, in public playgrounds and in the yards of condominiums. Needless to say, the pigs are not vaccinated. They defecate on the grass, on which humans and also pets - dogs and cats - sit. They enter pools of water and bathe in them (in Gan Shmuel and Bipa Nof). If the pig peed on the spot and you are sitting on the grass, you will not know that you have touched his excrement. If a baby touches the contaminated pool water he may get sick. If a dog sniffs and touches wild boar excrement on the grass, an infection may occur. If you contracted the disease from a pig, you will most likely not know that this is the source, because in most cases there is no one to connect the sitting on the grass with the disease that afflicted you, especially if you were not hospitalized.

Haifa Municipality does not issue warnings to the public in this regard.

Here is a story from my personal experience:
One night, in 2018, pigs were thinned on the grass next to the house. The contractor shot and killed two pigs that greatly disturbed the residents of the neighborhood. The carcasses remained until morning and the sanitation workers loaded them with a crane onto a truck. For a long time after that, whoever walked on the grass, hundreds of fleas and ticks (bloodsuckers) jumped on his feet and stung him. Dogs couldn't walk on the grass without getting covered in fleas. The reason is that as soon as the animal dies, all the parasites that feed on its blood disperse and look for another carrier. When I was exposed to the parasites left on the grass (and they stung me too), only then did I realize how many parasites there were on this animal.

Interview with Dr. Roni Koenig:

(Dr. Roni Koenig is a veterinarian at the Nature and Parks Authority)

What diseases can pigs transmit and how can we protect ourselves from them?

We test antibodies in the blood of animals to see exposure to diseases, this does not mean that they necessarily transmit them, it is likely that they catch them themselves. And we have a project where we carry out this monitoring regarding diseases.

Regarding rabies, in the meantime I can calm down a little and say that we have not yet come across cases of a pig with rabies in Israel. But the disease that there is a slight, but present, chance of finding in a pig is The mouse disease, which can also be found in other animals in Israel.
(Mouse is a serious disease that causes a variety of symptoms, among them meningitis - see details at the end of the article Y.K.).

The bottom line Pigs can transmit various diseases And there is a possibility that such a pig will transmit diseases to animals mainly, much less than the possibility that it will transmit to humans, according to the data we have.

Obviously, a pig that sits in a pool or water source, which humans use, is a situation that can lead to infection, especially if it urinates there, so I would recommend disinfection or drainage and disinfection of that water source in order to avoid infection or contamination.

In the summer months the pigs come up to look for water

Dangers of injury to people, children, injury to domestic animals, children, danger of collision, all these things have already happened. The fact is that the number of pigs has increased in such a way that there is simply no control, in nature there is usually a balance. There is a predator and there is a prey and the system is balanced. As soon as the balance is disturbed, what happens is that the breed of pigs becomes an outbreak breed, recognized by the Nature and Parks Authority.

"In the months of July-August the situation worsens because there is no water and the pigs go up to look for water, they can puncture the irrigation systems. We are expected to see damage to irrigation systems, gardening, both public and private yards. I did not make it up," says Luria, "We collected data on The timeline for several years and we saw what was happening. From that we deduced the actions that needed to be taken."

"The thinning we did was a thinning in front of a graph that I called a tolerable graph. A tolerable presence of pigs that do not constitute a nuisance to the public and where they were a nuisance to the public on a point-by-point basis, the thinning was carried out. After the thinning stopped the number of pigs and the meetings between the pig and the residents of Haifa increased, all animal and pig lovers They contributed with their own hands to the fact that if thinning is done to solve the problem, it will be massive."

About the mouse disease

(from the website of the Ministry of Health)

Leptospirosis, also known as "mouse", is an animal disease in which humans can also be infected.
The bacterium that causes the disease is Leptospira and there are 10 strains that cause morbidity.
The disease occurs in nature in animals, including rodents (rats and mice), dogs, sheep, cattle and wild pigs.

mode of infection

The Leptospira bacterium is excreted in the urine of a sick animal. The bacterium survives for weeks and even months in contaminated water and soil. Humans can become infected with the bacteria through exposure to secretions: from contact with urine containing the bacteria, ingestion or contact with water contaminated with urine, through wounds or body mucous membranes. Since the infection is through exposure to secretions, mainly urine, the danger of infection between person to person actually does not exist.
The risk of infection is increased in stagnant or slow-flowing water.
Mice is mainly an occupational disease. Those exposed to it are usually veterinarians or farm workers who work with animals, and workers who handle sewage and wastewater systems. However, in recent years there have been reports of tourism-related morbidity in water sources (containing animal excrement).

Signs of the mouse disease

Signs of transmission disease range from asymptomatic disease (no signs) to severe disease.
Most people who are exposed to the Leptospira bacterium will not develop the mouse disease at all. Whereas those who develop the disease will usually experience mild symptoms. Severe murine disease includes fever, headache, muscle pain, conjunctival bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Many times the symptoms resemble the flu.
In a small number of patients, the disease may become complicated and lead to liver damage, kidney failure, meningitis and respiratory failure.
In most cases, symptoms appear between one and two weeks after exposure to the bacteria. In exceptional cases, the symptoms can appear after three days, or up to three weeks.

Diagnosis of the mouse disease

The suspicion of mouse diseases arises from a combination of the symptoms of the disease and exposure to a source of infection.
There are general tests that support the diagnosis, and a specific laboratory diagnosis that verifies the diagnosis.

The ways of treating the mouse disease

The treatment of the mouse disease is carried out with antibiotics and is given in pills or through the vein.
There is no obligation to be hospitalized in all cases and you can receive treatment and be discharged home.

the prevalence of the disease

Rabies is a worldwide disease, but it is more common in tropical and subtropical regions.

Mouse in Israel

Mice is a disease known to animals in Israel for over a decade.
Historically, human disease with mice in Israel was rare, about five to 10 cases per year, most of them as a result of infection abroad.

In the summer of 2018, there was a large outbreak of over 700 patients, who were infected in freshwater streams in the Galilee and the Golan Heights. In the summer of 2020, another outbreak occurred in which about 85 cases were reported whose source of exposure was bathing in fresh water streams in the north of the country.
Animals sick with mice that are near the streams, may cause the water to be polluted and bathers to be infected with the disease.
The Ministry of Health calls on the public to be alert to the warnings published on the Ministry's website and by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, regarding water sources in which the water is not safe for bathing, and to contact a treating physician when suspected, while informing them of the possible exposure details.

  1. A sub-level of incitement. Only a few decades ago they said that Jews transmit diseases, this is the first connotation that comes to mind from this article.

Another thing, "dilution" of a population is called mass murder/genocide.

The solution is clear, and it is not understood why it has not yet been implemented: water for the wild animals needs to be brought to several places in forest areas, so that they do not have to look for water between the houses.

  2. Market the pigs to the Russians. They buy pork at Rossman's delicacies anyway. Do you know how much money it is?

  3. Oh, who will hear - "Murder of pigs". Twenty years of breeding pigs and you had no problem.
Now that they have multiplied from hundreds to thousands you have a problem with dilution.
It's good that you are not accused of genocide.. or mass slaughter on the basis of zoological hate crimes
    Enough with this flashy promil.
In every survey, 80 percent of Haifa residents demand thinning.
If Klish is not diluted, she and her people will be diluted from the municipality.
Trust the change council to put things in order and dilute the out-of-control hazard

  4. Luria Koenig Karmi and Ben Shimol, the criminals who prepare public opinion in order to get a license to kill pigs. All the diseases mentioned are extremely rare and only theoretical. In the same way you can get them from your pets from the dog and the cat. The writer is a doctor and understands zoonotic diseases.

  5. The pigs fertilize plants
    and spread seeds,
When people cut down trees in vain.

  6. Instead of confusing your mind in the month of Elul, it's time for you to do some soul searching and repent. It's not the pigs that are the problem. It's the people who commit transgressions and don't keep Torah and Mitzvot. They are the problem!!!

  7. Shame on you for the incitement.
Amazing animals, gentle in nature and smart
Do not harm animals or people
Urgently appeals to the municipality - to transfer water sources to them in the wadis. If they have water there, they will stay there

  8. Well done Kalish, all thanks to you!
In the upcoming elections only pigs will vote for you!
When will you leave together with your pigs!?

  9. Eyal, you were talking about a gang (really unrelated) I'll tell you a secret called crime families, a large part of which are from a well-known minority sector and you'll be surprised, but yes yes he controls Haifa and they don't do anything to them and if you don't look good to them they will mow you and your family down and pray deal with 1000 pigs than with them. To remind you of the defeat that the country suffered only about two months ago when unfortunately most of them took to the streets and the police and the army were afraid to deal with them.
The pig problem will eventually be solved one way or another, it's better to stay away from them.
But the second problem you raised will never be solved... and there is nowhere to run...

  10. The pigs have been in Haifa for over 16 years.. Now remember to write down what the risk factors are....?

  11. What cheap and stupid manipulations.
There is a danger of infection and disease in so many things that we come into contact with every day in our lives.
It is enough to scare the public that reads your trending articles.

  12. The wild boars have caused falls and broken limbs to the point of loss of consciousness and concussions, serious accidents, damage of tens of millions of NIS to private property and fear of the public to walk outside.
If it was a gang of people causing such damage, there would already be indictments and prison terms. But the animal activist who dressed up as a mayor and failed in the costume, does nothing when it's animals on all fours.
And even worse, she is recruiting a group of loud tweeters who are perhaps a promil of the residents of Haifa and are forcing themselves on all others demanding dilution since a year before the cortana and certainly when the damage from contact between wild animals and humans became clear to us. Those promil tweeters must also be the ones who refuse to be vaccinated and tested and are responsible for other damages besides the wild boar. quite! Enough to give in to this bunch of sleepwalkers.

  13. Mr. Yaron germs and diseases are everywhere. There is no escape. The world is mine and yours and that of millions of animals. And there is no real justification for your intimidation.

  14. Hmmm... so all the other arguments are over, you are now taken to the "ultimate" argument that makes cynical and malicious use, under the pretext of "disease transmission"?
    Oh wow…. You scared us!
How scared we are now! ???
Aren't you tired of chewing and grinding your consistent attempts to lead this agenda and all in the name of local politics?
To tell you how many dangers there are in things that some of you consume every day?
And I'm talking about animal food!
Number 1 cause of disease, in the world.
    but it's OK".
So please do us a personal favor, and respect the intelligence of the readers of your newspaper.
    please.
    Thanks.

  15. Nice scare.. another one..
There must be more incitement, it's endless with you
Did you know that you can also die from eating meat or get hospitalized from eating eggs or chicken because anything on the ground can catch an infection or through a tick that transmits diseases, but hey a cow that is transported from another country in its own shit for several months does not get cancer only wild pigs raised in the wild
You suffocated us with this nonsense
Lack of enforcement, many accidents and crime, serious crimes, slaughter in the system... everything is dwarfed by the terrifying pig of Haifa

  16. There are thousands of dogs in Haifa, my husband
Many dogs do not pick up the dog excrement, the excrement dries up and is spread by the wind, the dog excrement contains many dangerous bacteria, the dogs urinate on the grass where children play, the excrement and urine are also just as dangerous as wild boar excrement! There are more dogs in Haifa than wild pigs, why is this hazard not being dealt with? Aren't dog urine and feces dangerous???
