Upon arrival of fire crews at the garage on Hiram Street, a lithium battery was detected burning. The local sprinkler system on site was activated and stopped the fire from spreading to the other batteries in the garage. The crews completed the extinguishing operations using water lines and prevented further spread, which according to the fire department could have significantly increased the fire load and made extinguishing operations difficult. With the help of a mobile machine, the battery was evacuated from the building, which was scanned and found to be free of debris. The battery was transferred to a storage facility for final and complete extinguishing.
Lithium Batteries: Increased Risk and Safety Guidelines
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, lithium batteries burn at high temperatures, which makes firefighting operations difficult, and during combustion they emit toxic gases. In light of the increased risk, the Fire Department is refreshing a number of important guidelines for safe handling of lithium batteries: Do not charge lithium batteries unattended, when charging is complete, disconnect the battery from the charger, and use the battery only according to the manufacturer's instructions and do not make any changes to it. A fire investigator from the Haifa station is expected to arrive at the scene during the day to examine the circumstances of the incident.
