Why is fuel getting more expensive?
According to the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the price of gasoline in Israel is determined according to a formula that includes the international price of fuel in the Mediterranean basin, the marketing expense basket, excise tax, and VAT. The international price is calculated based on the average of fuel prices in the five trading days preceding the last two working days of the previous month.
In the current update, there was a significant increase in the international price of fuel products, alongside a 1.9% increase in the representative exchange rate, which stood at 3.058 shekels per dollar, compared to 3.001 shekels in the previous update. In detailing the components of the price per liter of gasoline, the total price before the marketing basket, excise tax and VAT stands at approximately 2.60 shekels. The marketing expenses basket stands at 64 agorot, the excise tax at 3.61 shekels and the VAT amounts to 1.24 shekels. Ultimately, the price to the consumer comes to 8.09 shekels per liter.
The price increase is not limited to gasoline: The Energy Ministry document also shows sharp increases in fuel oil prices at the refinery rate, with the price of light fuel oil with a sulfur content of 1% increasing by approximately 29.54% in shekels compared to the previous update.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure recommends that drivers compare prices between gas stations and choose the station that is most affordable for them. The new price will go into effect on the night between Saturday and Sunday, August 2, 2026.
