Prof. Amiratos Uri Batar, who was a senior doctor at Rambam Hospital, dean, and founder of the Faculty of Medicine, one of the first windsurfers in Israel, passed away tonight at the age of 92.

I have many good memories of this special man. In one of the springs, in 1984, I left with a windsurfer from the "Club" beach (Allenby interchange) from Bat Galim, about 10 minutes later I arrived at the quiet beach. An older man wearing a lycra shirt and well-slathered in sunscreen approached me, and asked me in this tone: "Young man, do you want to go skiing with me to Acre?"
"Yes" I answered a little hesitantly. "A bit far, isn't it?" I asked.
"Very nice, my name is Uri Batar, I've done it several times already, I saw that you are a good surfer, the wind and the direction are right, you can go out, it will take about an hour."

An hour and a half later I found myself at the horse beach in Acre.
In the meantime the wind has picked up, it is already 18-20 knots northwest, a direction and strength that allowed the way back to the Pacific coast in 45 minutes. Uri went down to the quiet beach, and I continued west, to the Bat Galim beach from where I left.

The highlight of that day was when I was driving home, I saw Uri Batar riding a bicycle, on his way home.
A few years later Prof. Uri Batar joined the community of surfers he was a pioneer of (all younger than him), and would come to the sea almost every day, until the day when the club was dismantled and work began to build the Allenby interchange.

In the fight against the marina, Uri joined us in the decisive discussion in the National Council for Planning and Construction.
When the surfers were allowed to speak, Prof. Batar stood up and said a few sentences, which may have been the ones that tipped the scales.
Uri Batar surfed with us until he was 80 years old.
May the memory of Prof. Uri Bater be blessed.

Uri is a charming man. He started surfing at Bat Galim beach together with my father, the late rabbi Menachem Rimon, and his partner, the late rabbi Yaakov Ben Ari, many years before me. A wonderful group of adventurers
