Every time I go out into the field, my eyes are fixed on the ground, as someone who loves animals and takes a broad view of nature as a gift. Most of the time, these are familiar, cyclical phenomena, part of the rich Haifa landscape. But this time, under the radar, an unusual and alarming phenomenon was discovered, a mass mortality of beetles in the Tel Shikmona area, for no apparent reason.
First Observation: The Upside Down Beetles ► Watch
After diving in the sea, on my way to the car, I noticed several black beetles about 2 cm in size, all upside down. When I turned them over, they immediately turned over again, as if they had lost control of their movement. I soon realized that these were not just a few individuals, the entire area was littered with beetles of the same species, swaying as they walked and turning over and over again.
Initial identification: Walking beggar
According to initial identification, it appears to be aA walking beggar, a beetle that is generally distributed in the south of the country. Its appearance in Haifa is not common, but what is truly disturbing is the extent of the mortality. In the Tel Shikmona area, there is no use of sprays, there are no nearby factories, and there is no known chemical factor that could explain the phenomenon.

A similar phenomenon from the past
The last time I encountered something similar was with beetles. פימליה, near a factory where there were apparently chemical substances. There was a clear reason for the result. Here — there is none. Tel Shikmona is a natural, clean area, with no known pollutants. Therefore, the big question remains open: What causes beetles to wobble, roll over, and die en masse?
A broad view of nature
Anyone who loves animals knows that nature is a delicate system, a gift that needs to be preserved. Unusual phenomena like this are not just scientific curiosities, they are warning lights. Nature photographers, entomologists, and nature enthusiasts are used to noticing the small details, identifying anomalies, understanding the terrain. This time, for me too, it is a real mystery.

We will continue to follow
I intend to continue monitoring the phenomenon, to see if this is an isolated incident or a sign of something broader. I will update as additional findings are received.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

Maybe all the concrete they poured there... they buried everything that was buried in concrete.
