(haipo) – Chevron, the operator of the Leviathan rig, has informed the Ministry of Environmental Protection about the execution of initiated and approved maintenance work on the rig, which will take place between February 24-27, 2026. As part of the work, variable gas injection activity is expected to occur into the rig's flare, which may be visible from the shore, with all operations being carried out under the supervision and monitoring of the ministry's officials and in accordance with existing emission permits.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection informed Lahi Pa:
Chevron, the operator of the Leviathan rig, has updated the Ministry of Environmental Protection about initiated and approved maintenance work on the Leviathan rig, which is planned for the coming days between February 24-27, 2026.
Due to this work, variable gas injection activity is expected to treat the rig flare and may be visible from the shore.
As mentioned, the actions on these dates are planned, approved and are under the supervision of representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
It should be clarified that burning gas in flares in permitted conditions is a normal operation of the rig. The flare is a globally accepted facility both for treating emissions into the air and as a safety measure. These gases are transferred to the flare in a controlled manner and treated by it through combustion, the purpose of which is to burn approximately 99% of the gases, and its products are carbon dioxide and water. Without the combustion of the gases, these pollutants would be emitted directly into the environment.
It should be emphasized that the requirements regarding the manner of operating the flares, the situations in which their operation is permitted, and the manner of control and reporting during their operation, are set forth in the rig's emission permit, which is published on the ministry's website.
