Haifa continues to establish its position as a key point in the IMEC International Trade Corridor project, one of the most significant geo-economic ventures of recent years. Chairman of the Haifa Economic Society, Rani Bender, Stresses that senior officials in the US government and the international economic community express clear support for a route that will pass through Haifa and connect India with Europe in a new, stable and efficient trade route. This support makes the project Israel's greatest economic opportunity. Regional developments and threats to traditional shipping routes reinforce the need for an alternative corridor, and Haifa is at the heart of the global debate.
Regional reality reinforces the need for an alternative corridor
Tensions in the shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf, threats to the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandab, and uncertainty in the region all underscore the need for alternative trade routes. The IMEC corridor, which combines land and maritime infrastructure, is becoming more relevant than ever, and Haifa stands at its center.
53 authorities have signed a charter to promote the corridor – and Haifa is leading the way
Last June, a joint agreement was signed in Haifa between 53 local authorities to promote regional cooperation around the IMEC corridor. The purpose of the agreement: to strengthen governmental and Israeli activity to promote the project.
An international IMEC conference was later held in the city, attended by dozens of senior representatives from the partner countries. The conference presented the economic, regional, and strategic implications of the corridor on the Haifa metropolis, and emphasized that the city could become a major logistics hub.
Working visit to Washington: Unambiguous American support
In the past two months, political and economic contacts have taken place in the United States to promote the corridor. Chairman of the Haifa Economic Society, Rani Bender, Met in Washington with members of Congress from both parties, including Craig Goldman of Texas and Brad Schneider of Illinois, as well as with research institutes and economic organizations.
According to Bender: “In all the meetings we held in Washington, we heard a clear message: the IMEC trade corridor must pass through Haifa. The American administration understands that Haifa is the central strategic point connecting the Middle East and Europe.”
Bandar added that countries such as Iran, Russia, China, and Turkey are working to promote other trade alternatives, which emphasizes the importance of promoting the Israeli route in cooperation with the US.
Haifa enjoys unique infrastructure advantages
The Haifa Economic Society notes that the city has some of the most advanced infrastructure in Israel:
- Active seaports
- Central railways
- Energy and communication infrastructure
- Proximity to industrial and logistics centers
These could make Haifa a central hub for goods arriving from India and the Gulf countries on their way to Europe.
In addition, in the past month, inquiries have been received from international entities interested in examining collaborations as part of preparations for the corridor.
Call to the government: “Prepare now for the historic opportunity”
Bender calls on the government to act quickly: “The State of Israel must make strategic decisions that will allow Haifa to become the trade center of the region. A free trade zone should be established in Haifa Bay and a 15-year VAT exemption should be granted to encourage investment and ensure that the North will be a full partner in the economic revolution that the IMEC corridor will bring to Israel.”
