(haipo) – The family of the late Capt. (Res.) Amit Hayut, who fell in heroic battle in southern Lebanon in October 2024, is launching a crowdfunding campaign to establish a memorial observatory in the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood in Haifa, the place where he grew up, played, loved and became the person and warrior he was. The observatory will bear his name, “Mitzpe Amit” It will serve as a meeting point, a place of communion and connection to the landscape for the residents of the neighborhood and the entire city.
Amit's character: excellence, modesty and love of country
Amit Hayut, from the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood, was a Technion graduate, graduating with honors in the combined computer science and mathematics track, and worked at NVIDIA. Alongside academic and professional excellence, Amit was a man of nature: a surfer, a mountaineer, a lover of the land and people.
His friends describe him as a quiet leader, one who led without raising his voice, who instilled confidence in his presence. He was devoted to his family and his partner, Shiri, and was an anchor of calm, responsibility, and love for them.
300 days of reserve duty – and fighting until the last moment
With the outbreak of the Iron Sword War, Amit enlisted in the reserves and served over 300 days. On October 26, 2024, in the Battle of Aitrun, in southern Lebanon, he charged at the head of the force to rescue wounded soldiers under heavy fire and prevent the kidnapping of soldiers.
Amit fell as a hero, displaying extraordinary courage and a fighting spirit that continues to resonate in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Mitzpe Amit: A bright spot where it all began
The family is establishing a memorial observatory at the northern point of Gan Nachum in Neve Sha'anan, a green space where Amit grew up, played, ran and watched the Haifa Bay and the sea that he loved so much.
The observatory will include:
- Quiet and inviting seating area
- Panoramic view balcony of the sea and the city
- A monument that tells the story of his life and heroism
The vision is to create a place that will be a community asset, a space for communion, for encounter, for inspiration, and for connection to the landscape and the values that Amit embodied.
“Help us turn memory into a living reality”
The project is being carried out with self-financing and donor assistance, and the work is planned to be completed by the Tishrei holidays of 2017.
The family is now appealing to the general public to take part in establishing the observatory.
The campaign opens today, and you can donate and be a partner in establishing the observatory.
A memory that lives on
“Mitzpe Amit” is designed to ensure that the story of Amit, the boy from the neighborhood who became a brilliant engineer, a brave warrior, and a beloved person, will continue to touch hearts for many years to come.
This is a place that will tell the story of his life, the man he was and the battle in which he fell, and will make his memory an inseparable part of the landscape and the community in which he grew up.
