(haipo) – The most popular hiking trail in Haifa – the Stella Maris Trail – has reopened in Kochav Hayam. The National Center for the Development of Sacred Sites has removed the lock from the iron gate that was placed on the “Stella Maris Trail” towards Elijah’s Cave. In place of the lock, only a bolt remains, along with a sign asking visitors to be sure to close the gate after passing through. The gate is intended to prevent wild boars from entering the compound.
Haifa system appeals following resident complaints
The decision to remove the lock was made following a request from the Haifa newspaper to the Haifa Municipality and the National Center for the Development of Holy Places. The request was made following a report from concerned residents, including Ratzia Halevi and her partner Gadi Halevi, along with other residents.
As a result of the appeal, the center ordered the guard who was responsible for opening and locking the gate according to the operating hours of Elijah's Cave to remove the lock completely. The change now allows hikers and visitors to continue to enjoy the trail and area that has been open to the public for years.

As a reminder, on 12/1/25, the "Hai Pa" team contacted the relevant authorities in the Haifa Municipality and the National Center for the Development of Holy Places. On the same day, an update was received regarding the establishment of contact between the parties and the decision to handle the request quickly.
We are pleased to inform the public that the gate is open for passage, and ask visitors to be sure to close it with the bolt in order to maintain order in the area. The “Stella Maris Trail” continues to be a central and inviting destination for the city’s residents and visitors.
