A study from Finland has found a link between high coffee consumption and less belly fat and more muscle mass. But does this mean you should start drinking five cups of coffee a day? A family medicine expert explains what you can really learn from the findings and what you need to know before you rush to fill up your cup.

For millions of people, coffee is an integral part of their morning routine. Now, a new study from Finland is generating a lot of interest after finding a link between high coffee consumption and healthier body composition. The researchers found that people who drank five or more cups of coffee a day tended to have less deep abdominal fat and even had higher muscle mass compared to people who drank little or no coffee.

But according to experts, despite the intriguing findings, it is important to be careful not to draw conclusions too quickly.

The study that found a link between coffee and body composition

The study, conducted at the University of Oulu in Finland, was based on data from 2,264 participants and examined the relationship between coffee consumption habits and various measures of body composition.

The findings indicated that heavy coffee drinkers tended to have less deep abdominal fat, which is considered a significant risk factor for heart disease, diabetes and other metabolic problems. In addition, this group was also found to have higher muscle mass.

Does drinking coffee really cause weight loss?

According to Dr. Ron Goldman, family medicine specialist, medical director of the Psagot Yam Clinic in the Northern District of Meuhedet And as a graduate of obesity medicine, the answer is not necessarily.

"This is an observational study, so it indicates a relationship between the variables but does not prove that coffee is the cause of weight loss or the reduction of abdominal fat," she explains.

She said that people who drink more coffee may also have other healthy habits that were not fully measured in the study, so a cause-and-effect relationship cannot be determined.

"We cannot conclude that a person who starts drinking more coffee will necessarily lose weight," emphasizes Dr. Goldman.

How might caffeine affect the body?

Although there is no proof that coffee directly leads to weight loss, caffeine has several biological mechanisms that may explain the association found.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, may temporarily increase resting metabolic rate and aid in fat breakdown. In addition, coffee contains active ingredients such as polyphenols and chlorogenic acids, which may affect the body's sensitivity to insulin and balance blood sugar levels.

Hunger also has a possible connection. Caffeine may briefly reduce the secretion of the hunger hormone ghrelin, thereby helping to reduce appetite in some people.

However, Dr. Goldman emphasizes that five cups of coffee a day is not a medical recommendation or a "therapeutic dose" for weight loss. It is only the high consumption category examined in the study.

Black, inverted or latte? What you add to coffee matters

One of the significant factors in the effect of coffee on weight is precisely what is inside the cup.

Black coffee without sugar contains almost no calories, so its impact on total daily calorie intake is negligible. In contrast, milk adds calories but also provides protein, calcium, and important nutrients, so it can be incorporated into a balanced diet even during a weight loss process.

The problem starts with large coffee drinks that are loaded with additives like sugar, syrups, whipped cream, and large amounts of milk. These drinks can contain hundreds of calories and make it difficult to create the calorie deficit needed for weight loss.

"The message is not that you must drink black coffee," says Dr. Goldman. "You can certainly drink coffee with milk as part of a weight loss process, as long as you are aware of the quantity and additives."

There is no magic food for weight loss.

According to Dr. Goldman, one of the most common mistakes is trying to find a food, drink or supplement that will provide a quick fix for weight loss.

"Coffee, lemon, or various supplements cannot replace overall behavioral change," she says.

She says successful weight loss is based on a combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, stress management, and long-term habit change. In some cases, medication or other interventions may also be needed, depending on the patient's condition.

The goal: long-term health, not rapid weight loss.

In an era where magic solutions and crash diets are gaining popularity, experts emphasize that true success is not measured by the speed of weight loss, but by the ability to maintain it over time.

"Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease," concludes Dr. Goldman. "The goal is not just to lose weight, but to improve health, quality of life and function, and to build habits that can be maintained over the years."

The bottom line is, if you enjoy coffee, there's no reason to give it up. But even if the new study gives coffee lovers another reason to smile, it seems that five cups a day alone won't do the trick. The path to healthy weight loss still lies through a balanced lifestyle, not just a cup of coffee.
