Nahal Kishon - the struggles, the restoration, the cleaning and the plans for the future
The Kishon stream has been polluted with fuels and heavy and toxic metals since the 30s (about 80 years).
The British, who established the petrochemical plants in the Haifa Bay, began to discharge industrial wastewater even then.
The massive discharge of wastewater from the industry has been significantly reduced, but has not stopped completely.
While the State of Israel is currently investing about NIS 250 million in cleaning the toxic sludge from the bottom of the stream, various fuel leaks continue to plague the waters of the stream every winter.
In addition to pollution from industry, the municipality of Haifa discharges approximately 19 cubic meters of sewage per year from the sewage treatment plant in Kishon, according to the municipality's own publications.
And I add one more time, maybe someone missed it, the CEO is:
Adv. Alona Shafer (Karo)
The director general of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, attorney Alona Shafer (Karo), visited the work area for the restoration of the Kishon stream last week. During the tour, the works to dig the new route to Nahal Kishon, which was filled with rainwater for the first time, were presented to the CEO. The new route will absorb the water from the stream, which will allow the cleaning and purification of the original stream bed. A metropolitan park will be built around the new route, which will include bike paths and other attractions that will attract residents of the area.
The director general of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, attorney Alona Shafer (Karo), said during the tour: "The restoration of the Kishon is already an existing fact and not a plan on paper. In the coming months, the purification of the contaminated soil along the original route will also begin."
