Nahal Ovadia road - explanatory and informational presentation
A plan for a road that will pass through Nahal Ovadia arouses objections among environmental organizations in Haifa.
This page gathers the information about the project and the objections related to it

Viron Hanan continues as usual: bringing up here his wiser and less wise words. But when he is approached in response, he does not bother to answer. After all, he already wrote his. Why should he waste time on other people's confusions.
Questions to Yaron Hanan regarding the original proposal he brought:
1. Have you checked for each neighborhood the applicability of the road in terms of the slope of the mountain. Take for example the steep slope below Carmelia. Where will a long and winding road be built there?
2. Have you checked the possibility that every neighborhood road that will be paved will be one-way with only one route. In one neighborhood the road is only for going down, and in the neighborhood next to it the road is only for going up, and so alternately. In this way, the destruction to the mountain will be much less, since each path will be relatively narrow. In addition, it seems to me that a road that is only downhill can be a little steeper than a road going up (the speed will be limited there). Therefore, at least on the descending roads, the routes will be shorter (less destruction to the mountain). The solution is a little less convenient, but more friendly to the mountain.
Soon, a procedure known by the municipality as "public participation" will begin, in which residents and their representatives will be presented with a number of "alternatives" to solve the problem of traffic congestion on the ridge axis, first of all the alternative chosen by the municipality of Haifa et al. It means the elimination of one of the beautiful natural gems left in Carmel - Nahal Ovadia, in order to move a monstrous multi-lane road from the Ramat Golda neighborhood to the west. The action committee to save Nahal Ovadia prepared an impressive presentation (attached to this website) that well illustrates the folly of the alternative promoted by the municipality. The action committee was established by the residents of the area and citizens who still care about the issue of preserving nature in our city and preserving the quality of life in the ridge neighborhoods.
Already a few years ago, a similar forum was organized from all the neighborhoods in the ridge to formulate in an agreed upon alternative, logical, cheap and sane. The alternative was sent to the official planning bodies, but was rejected outright and was not seriously examined by them... The alternative of the forum, which I initiated and coordinated at the time, was formulated with the assistance of first-class professional experts in city planning and transportation. We expected that this alternative that combines a number of smart and practical solutions would be presented to the decision makers and we were disappointed. As usual, they had already shot the arrow and marked the target around it. In order to mislead the public, they ostensibly presented the results of an examination by a sort of "committee of experts" which allegedly considered and found that the Nahal Ovadia alternative was better, as they had wanted from the beginning in Ypa Nof.
The Nahal Ovadia alternative is tailored according to the interests of "Yafa-Nof" Co. which lives only thanks to grandiose and expensive projects that feed and support it for many years. There is no consideration of the real interest of the residents and of Haifa in a long-term view!!
To understand the alternative we proposed I will describe its meanings in a narrative form:
David and Bat Sheva live in one of the neighborhoods of the ridge. They are planning to go to Tel Aviv this morning to visit relatives in Ramat Gan. Not far from their home, they get on a neighborhood bus, after waiting for it for less than 5 minutes. The small bus goes down to the western end of the neighborhood and goes down the road that connects it to road 4 and from there they arrive about 10 minutes later at the Carmel Beach central station. There, after about fifteen minutes of waiting, they get on the train to Tel Aviv and use the ticket they already purchased on the bus that left their house. About an hour and a half after leaving the house, they are already at the Savidor station in Tel Aviv. Batsheva reminded David how just a few years ago, that trip to Tel Aviv was a nightmare whose joy is already behind us. So there was no escape from starting the car, creeping slowly up the neighborhood - the ridge axis would come, getting stuck in endless and nerve-wracking traffic jams, nervously arriving at the station area the train and walk around for long minutes to find a free parking lot which is usually a long walk from the station and for all this "pleasure" you have to get up an hour earlier, to arrive at a reasonable time and then this whole nightmare repeats itself back home in the afternoon.
This scenario is not imaginary, it is possible. Convenience, fuel savings and air pollution are not a dream, such a scenario occurs in many cities in the world every day as a matter of routine. The difference is that the city's franchisees planned for many years ahead, In view of the good of the residents only
In addition to the script shown below, there are other solutions that we have proposed and they work in combination To provide an optimal solution for the benefit of the residents and the environment. The alternative that the municipality led by Yona Yahav and Hadeva Almog together with "Yafa-Nof" is promoting will be a cry for generations, while seriously harming the natural environment, encouraging driving in noisy, polluting and fuel-guzzling private cars and in stark contrast to the current prevailing trend in the world that encourages the use of convenient and available public transportation and a reduction in the construction of monstrous roads And anti-environmental!!
Attached is a file with the original proposal of the Ridge Neighborhoods Forum for a sane and reasonable alternative. As mentioned, this alternative has not been seriously examined nor will it be presented to the residents of the area. Only here you can read and hear about it.
Dear residents, members of the Society for the Protection of Nature and environmentalists - please wake up and join the action committee that has arisen to save Nahal Ovadia for you!
