(live here) – Residents of the old Romema neighborhood in Haifa are complaining about unbearable noise caused by infrastructure work by the Israel Electric Company in Nahal Giborim, which is being carried out at night, until the wee hours of the morning. The municipality confirms the work is taking place, but claims that it is essential work.
While large parts of Haifa are being renovated and receiving modern infrastructure, residents of the old Romema neighborhood feel they are paying the price. Starting Sunday, May 4, 5, the Israel Electric Company began underground infrastructure work in Nahal Giborim and Simcha Golan Street as part of a project to bury electrical cables that will improve the city's electricity supply and allow for preparation for future infrastructure.
The work includes replacing overhead power lines with underground infrastructure, and is expected to last until September. However, for residents living near the work site, this will mean long months of severe disruption to their quality of life, and sometimes even real harm to their health.
"We are parents of a four-month-old baby who doesn't sleep at night anyway, but what's happening here is simply unbearable," says a resident of 20 Keren Hayesod Street. "Three times a week, until five in the morning, drilling without stopping. I didn't close an eye. It's a bone-piercing noise, louder than any reasonable standard. How can you function like that the next day?"
A similar appeal was also received from the mother of one of the residents: "My daughter and her husband with a small baby are simply collapsing. This is a planning oversight and disrespect for people trying to live their lives. How can they give permission to work at night for so many months, in the heart of a residential neighborhood?"
According to the Electric Company's announcement, this is a strategic project that will serve all Haifa residents: burying electrical cables in the ground between the "Romma" and "Sprinzak" substations - part of a comprehensive plan to improve the appearance of the city and the stability of the electricity grid. The company clarifies that there may be temporary changes to traffic arrangements, and it is working in coordination with the Haifa Municipality and transportation authorities to minimize disruption as much as possible.
However, residents who contacted the electric company were met with denial, they said: "They said they were unaware of any work at night, even though flyers were distributed in the neighborhood. The municipality also denied responsibility, and the police? Approval was given through them, but no one answers at the station," describes one of the applicants.
Up to twice a week only
The Haifa Municipality responded: "The Electric Company has received a permit to carry out night work on Nahal HaGiborim Road, up to twice a week only. This is essential infrastructure work aimed at strengthening and expanding the ability to supply electricity to the city of Haifa. Most of the work is carried out during the day, but some of it - which cannot be carried out during these hours due to safety and operational restrictions - must be carried out at night. We are working together with the Electric Company to minimize the hazards and apologize for the temporary inconvenience caused as a result of this essential work."
The benefits from the project will outweigh the temporary noise damage.
The electricity company responded: "This is a project that was carried out in advance coordination between the Electric Company and the Haifa Municipality, and is designed to significantly improve the city's electrical infrastructure, and the safety and visibility of the public space by burying electrical cables in the ground. The project includes quarrying in rocky and hard ground, so noise will sometimes be heard."
All residents were informed about the project through all media outlets, including details about the hours of operation.
The Israel Electric Company is doing its best to reduce noise and block roads, but there is work that can only be done at night, so as not to disrupt normal daily routines. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience and promise that the benefits of the project will outweigh the temporary noise damage."
No response was provided by the police.
What's the point of complaining if they're doing illegal renovation work? Maybe they're working at night, which saves traffic jams. . In any case, I think it's good that workers work at night, which prevents a lot of things. Sometimes the work doesn't move because the work during the day interferes. There were complaints about why they work during the day and don't disturb. Well done, appreciate it!
Infrastructure work to strengthen nothing and nothingness just because of the additional residents in the destructive TAMA 38
There is an endless need for additional water pipes and electrical lines.
TAMA 38 is terrorism against the country's residents.
All the best, they are developing, what are the problems of the dead? A beautiful city, a city of ups and downs.
Mayor, I'm sorry, these are the results.
Isn't making noise against laws and regulations?
That the victims should go and complain... and settle this matter in court.
leftist…
But, what's the connection?
Years of brainwashing:
"Why aren't the works carried out at night like abroad❗️ - something that is absolutely not true."
When you work in the morning, you get angry and cry because there are traffic jams on the way to work, to the gardens, to the sea.
When you work at night, you get angry and cry.
When they don't work at all, they cry.
Typical Haifaites will never change.
Go out and protest about this too.
