(live here) – The regular Haifa City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, 6/5/25, immediately after the plenary meeting of the Local Planning and Building Committee, which will open at 17:30 PM.
The agenda includes a diverse range of topics, centered on four proposals for the agenda, mainly concerning the environment, public space, and the city's urban future.
Establishing a policy for planting trees in empty planting pits
The first proposal will be put forward by Councilwoman Sally Abed, who calls for a city policy to address the empty planting holes scattered throughout the city. Abed argues that this is an environmental and aesthetic opportunity to improve the city's appearance, reduce the urban heat island, and add greenery to public spaces.
It's time for a new urban vision.
Council member Zeev Sonenzon will present a broad proposal calling for an update to Haifa's urban vision. According to Sonenzon, a new vision is needed to adapt the city to the challenges of the coming decades – including in the areas of housing, transportation, the economy and sustainability – and to strengthen Haifa's position as a leading northern metropolis.
We need more natural, less synthetic – improving the courtyards of educational institutions
In a joint proposal by council members Zeev Sonenzon and attorney David Etzioni, the two seek to launch a municipal program to upgrade school and kindergarten yards - moving from the use of synthetic grass and plastic facilities to more natural yards, which will include vegetation, trees, and open play spaces.
Is Haifa ready for the climate crisis?
The fourth proposal, also by Sonenzon, deals with the city of Haifa's preparation for the consequences of the climate crisis. The proposal calls on the council to discuss a municipal emergency plan that includes infrastructure, outreach, immunity of critical institutions, treatment of flood hotspots, and preparation for extreme climate change in the coming years.
Later in the meeting, a series of items will be presented for approval, including appointments, contracts, and changes in the status of municipal properties. Among the items: appointment of a legal advisor to the municipality, the Kishon River rehabilitation project, certification of inspectors, periodic reports from the mayor and the ombudsman, and more.
What Councilman Yaakov Borowski says regarding Proposition 19 is very worrying.
Do we have a criminal in a senior and significant position in the municipality?
Talking about cam cam, what do they care?
72% jump in Haifa Municipality parking reports over last year. Almost 50,000 parking reports.
And the city of Haifa is joyful and happy, there is no normal public transportation and the roads are congested, a battlefield of fines.
The city council also has a level of therapeutic pre-school.
How many people are disconnected?
About 80% of the apartments in Haifa are without a fire alarm system and buildings that will not withstand an earthquake.
So it is important to have trees etc.
But it's important to have residents in the city
Meanwhile, negative migration from aging Haifa
Many young people are fleeing the city, and it's a shame.
