Prof. Avraham Lorber passed away – Director of the Pediatric Cardiology Department at Rambam

(live here) – Prof. Avraham Lorber, director of the Pediatric Cardiology Department at Rambam and one of the leaders in the field of pediatric cardiology in Israel, has passed away. The man who repaired hearts – his heart stopped beating. His funeral will take place today, 17/4/25 at 15:30 PM at the old Hof Carmel Cemetery in Haifa.

Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital - Rambam, said goodbye to one of its central and beloved physicians - Clinical Associate Professor Avraham Lorber, Director of the Institute for Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Defects in Adults. Prof. Lorber, who stood at the forefront of the field of pediatric cardiology for decades, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, medical innovation, and a deep commitment to the health of children and adults with heart defects.

Prof. Lorber was an expert in pediatrics, cardiology, and pediatric cardiology, and specialized in clinical diagnosis and treatment, as well as in performing complex catheterization treatments for congenital heart defects - a field in which he was considered a pioneer and leader at the national and international levels.

In addition to his senior position at Rambam, Prof. Lorber was an initiator and partner in establishing the "Children's Heart" project - an extraordinary venture of a mobile pediatric cardiology clinic, which reached medical centers and community clinics throughout the north. In this way, he succeeded in bringing advanced medicine even to children far from the major centers, with a deep commitment to medical equality and accessibility.

Prof. Lorber believed that medicine has no borders. Over the years, he promoted the involvement of the institute he headed in humanitarian treatment of people with congenital heart defects from neighboring countries, often crossing physical and mental borders, out of a deep human mission.

Beyond his clinical activities, Prof. Lorber was also a central figure in academia: a clinical associate professor at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion, and a graduate of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. His research areas included invasive diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, the application of innovative technologies, and the study of genetic arrhythmias. He also served as a teacher and proctor of invasive cardiology in developing countries, where he mentored a new generation of physicians.

Prof. Lorber's death is a great loss to the healthcare system, but his work will continue to beat in the hearts of the thousands of patients and colleagues to whom he dedicated his life.

You loved to pickle cucumbers and tomatoes so much that only you love and know how to pickle.
You were so smart in your profession and in general…
You performed surgery on the late Ariel Sharon.

  5. How I will miss you, a much-loved man who saved my life.
The late Dr. Lorber accompanied me, my sister, and my children at every stage of our lives. He was the one who gave me the option to choose innovative technology for his time for 30 years and accompanied me through the process hand in hand (with his grace and characteristic humor - he invited me to tango) and together with the British Dr. Michael Tynan, I was the first to undergo ASD closure.
I love this man very much. This is a great loss for the Lorber family and for us, his patients.

  6. Prof. Lorber is a man of great stature. An amazing man with vast knowledge and yet a sense of humor, a warm-hearted human being who looks at the patient at eye level. He treated my son 18 years ago when he was born and over the years in the follow-ups we performed occasionally and recently. He always explained, always with a smile. There is a lack of doctors like him who are a perfect combination of humanity and knowledge. He certainly left a legacy behind him. A great loss. May his memory be blessed.

  7. I was left without words.

  9. I am so sad. An amazing doctor, kind, smart and witty. He accompanied me and my family for over 30 years and always treated me with amazing expertise, was approachable to the community and it was easy to get an appointment with him. I felt like I had a doctor who, even though he had progressed so much, continued to treat everyone. A great loss.

  10. Such a lovely person. My heart aches for a second now that I saw it. He took care of my child since he was 3 and has been for 17 years. So sad… RIP

  16. A lovely doctor!
I was with him once with my 4-year-old son. He was pleasant, humane, and had an amazing attitude towards children. May his memory be blessed.

  17. 40 years ago, he was the first at Carmel Hospital to discover the nature of the shock in my heart. He sent me to Beilinson Hospital for a consultation with a specialist who treats in this field. What a shame for David. T.N.C.B.H.

  18. His death is a complete shock to me! The tears never stop – Prof. Lorber discovered a heart problem in me at the age of 16 and has been with me every year since then until now – I have grown up and I am 48 years old… Prof. Lorber was the only doctor who saw me as a 16-year-old girl who should live as a teenager and thanks to him I am here – without fear or anxiety he saw me and understood that I deserved to live as a teenager and while many doctors had already sent me to the operating table he saw another option and gave my family and me the strength to continue – a kind, funny, pleasant man with endless patience and a heart full of compassion – where are there more people like that man? May his memory be blessed

  19. Of blessed memory
    An amazing person
A professional doctor with great knowledge
He took care of my daughter since she was 2.
    18 years
    A really big loss.

    • A great and great doctor, a man of the people
I had the privilege of working under his tutelage, a unique, professional and pleasant person.
      Too bad for him😥
      Of blessed memory

    • Shock! What a man. How humane and kind and professional and humorous. Prof. Lorber took care of my daughter from the age of one month until today when she is almost 28.
I will always remember the sentence he told me at the beginning of the journey. Raise your daughter as a normal child, she will grow up to be normal. Raise her as a sick child, she will grow up to be sick. How much strength that sentence gave and still gives me, the attitude. We will miss you very, very much. May your soul be bundled in the bundle of life.

  21. A wonderful man, with extraordinary knowledge and experience, along with a captivating humanity and sense of humor. The world would be less beautiful without people like him.

  22. What a person, what a personality, what a doctor with divine grace, what a loss 😪
    May his memory be blessed🙏

  23. A very nice and charming doctor with a sense of humor. It was fun to go to him for a checkup. Sad. We will miss him.

  24. Doctor, gentleman, humanity!! We met him a week ago at the clinic, although he looked weak, with a cheerful face greeting us and showing kindness.
A great loss, may his memory be blessed.

  25. Very sad!
    A heavy loss!
"Leaving behind a legacy of compassion…."
Please teach him what compassion is and other values that doctors need in their arsenal!!

  26. ❤️‍🩹With complete surprise and shock, with great sadness, with immense heartache, I heard about the death of Professor Avraham Lorber.
He was an extraordinary personality in his humanity, his knowledge, his wisdom, and the excellent and special human relationships he had with everyone.
Always with a smile, at eye level, with infinite patience, with a heart of giving, caring, dedication, love for humanity,
    I can't believe he's really gone.
His death is a drama for me, an immense pain, a deep sorrow.
As far as I'm concerned, it would be difficult to impossible to find a replacement with the same stature and humility as him.
A difficult and painful loss to his loving family,
And to all the children in Israel and around the world for the loss of a talented and humane man and doctor.
I was privileged to know him and his memory and soul will always remain with me. T.N.C.B.E. 💐

    • I agree with every word you said! We had our son's annual check-up with Prof. Lorber. Always with joy, kindness, and wisdom. A pleasant experience even though the examination was not pleasant when he was a small baby. A great loss for the patients. Condolences to the family for this dear man. Thank you very much for the hours of care and concern for the patients. May his memory be blessed.

  27. Indeed, a great heart has fallen silent.
He was not only an expert in his field but also a charming man who treated his young patients with respect and dignity.

    • An amazing person and doctor with divine grace, he took care of my child from the age of 3 months until today (18).
      We lost a great man.
I share in the family's grief.

  28. Zatzel
He operated on my son when he was 13 years old due to a congenital heart defect that he has been treating until today at the age of 37. A top-notch doctor, always smiling and with a healthy sense of humor. He has a huge heart. A great loss to medicine and the city of Haifa. May his memory be blessed.
