Danger on city stairs • A woman was injured when she slipped on public stairs in Haifa

(live here) – An elderly woman was seriously injured after slipping and falling on the stairs connecting Herzl Street and HaNeviim Street in the city. Liat Amar, who witnessed the incident, described the dramatic moments: "I cried my heart out for the elderly woman. She was injured in her face and head, it was a hard and shocking sight."

A serious injury occurred last Thursday (3/4/25) on the public stairs connecting Herzl Street and HaNevi'im Street in Haifa. An elderly woman tripped and slipped while descending, sustaining injuries to her face and head and requiring medical treatment and evacuation by MDA teams.

Liat Amar, a resident of the area who walks up the stairs every day, witnessed the incident and was horrified by the sight. "I cried my heart out for her," she said. "She fell with the basket she was carrying, on her face and head. These stairs are slippery and dangerous. The municipality must install anti-slip rails – not just here, but on all public stairs in the city."

Haifa is known for its mountainous topography, and for the many stairs that connect neighborhoods, streets, and viewpoints. The stairs pass through magical corners, ancient alleys, spectacular views, and diverse cultures. But alongside the beauty, there is also danger. Many residents and visitors warn about the poor condition of many of the city’s stairs, which are sometimes neglected, worn out, and lack basic safety measures.

The stairs where the accident occurred, near 63 Herzl Street, are a clear example of this reality. "This is an especially dangerous section," say residents of the area. "The maintenance is poor, there are no safety or warning strips, and the risk of slipping increases especially on rainy or humid days."

We contacted the Haifa Municipality to find out how the municipality currently maintains public stairs that connect streets or neighborhoods in the city? What steps are being taken to prevent slipping and increase safety on these types of stairs? In the hope that the unfortunate incident will lead to change.

The Haifa Municipality responded:
"An inspection conducted by a professional team on behalf of the Haifa Municipality to examine the condition of the stairs in question revealed that the stairs are in good physical condition. However, soap residue was found on the stairs, which was apparently used for washing by an unknown party - which could cause slipping and constitute a safety hazard. In addition to the ongoing maintenance activities carried out on public stairs throughout the city, the municipality will renew the stripes glued to the stairs to prevent slipping, as an additional safety measure."

  1. What are they doing to the brain? Look at the stairs from decades of use.
The stairs look as if they have been polished, a criminal neglect by the Hatiyar who returned to rule the city, from the bottom up.

  2. All public stairs in Haifa must have a metal side railing to allow for holding on to them when using the stairs - going up and down. The Haifa Municipality must do this immediately.

    • Historic stairs. Built during the Mandate.
So they made stone steps because they wear out less.
Duct tape is a band-aid. Either they cut it out or they attach a rubber band that doesn't slip on it.

    • I also didn't understand what the stairs were between Herzl and Neviim. Until I saw that it was at Herzl 63, I thought maybe the stairs at the corner of Neviim were behind where it used to be. But it's close to the market. In fact, the other side of Hadar. 🤦‍♀️

  4. It's true, there are lots of places with potholes on the roads and they're not being fixed. It's very sad that this is the case.

  5. You can stick stripes across each step to prevent slipping: cheap, fast, effective.
Besides, install railings so there is something to hold on to.

  6. It sounds very unpleasant, but there are no stairs connecting Herzl and Neviim, and certainly not at Herzl 63… Herzl 63 These are the Itzkowitz stairs, and they connect to Hehalutz Street. Hundreds of people walk down these stairs every day, and they don’t fall, but they are indeed slippery because they are stone steps.

  7. These stairs are completely standard. You don't slip on them unless you wear shoes that are not suitable for winter, and then you can slip anywhere. The lady is probably looking to sue the municipality and then wanted to publicize her fall as some kind of overwhelming proof of the municipality's negligence, but there is no negligence. Either she was talking on the phone and didn't pay attention and tripped, or she wasn't wearing appropriate shoes and therefore slipped.

  8. It should be noted that, with all due respect, there are no stairs between Herzl 63 and HaNevi'im Street…

    • That's right. Herzl Street meets with prophets only at its beginning and there are no stairs there.
