Haifa: Apartment burned down as a result of Shabbat candles

From Fire and Rescue it was delivered to Lai Pa:

A few minutes ago, firefighters from the Haifa station, under the command of Rabbi Reshef Ronen Atias, completed their work on a fire in a residential apartment on Yosef Street in Haifa.

The team reported smoke upon initial arrival and found that the apartment owner had managed to evacuate himself before arrival.
The fighters quickly located the source, took control of the fire, and worked to clear the smoke from the house.

A fire investigator arrived at the scene and, after examining the incident, said that it was likely the Shabbat candles that caused the fire to break out.

There were no injuries at the scene, but damage was caused.

This is an opportunity to remind you that lighting candles can be dangerous and should only be lit on a stable surface away from flammable materials such as plastics or fabrics that may catch fire from the heat radiation.

  1. It's time for the Orthodox rabbis to give up and make electric lighting of 2 battery-powered lamps
    This is a dangerous practice.

  2. I live on Joseph a few blocks away. If this is the building I think it is, and on the ground floor, the resident is a single double amputee. He's walking around but he doesn't have much and I hope he's okay and they take care of his housing. I hope so for everyone but especially for a difficult case like his.

  3. An apartment doesn't burn down as a result of Shabbat candles, but as a result of the stupidity of those who lit them. And you were saved for your souls...
Next time, keep the Sabbath and keep the fire burning…

    • Please read my previous comment. I passed by there today on my way to the bus. I was right about who lives there. This man is not stupid but he is a double amputee. He has old style prosthetics and walks very badly on them. He has a wheelchair but he is 70 years old and not very good on his own. He has a mobility scooter which is still outside. I have no idea where they took him. This man was in the merchant navy with Zim passenger ships, his whole life and now spends his days just sitting on the Marpasat. I think he goes to some kind of therapy or program every morning but other than that, it is his life. Please be kind. You don't know other people's lives.
