"The Jewish-American community held Omar in high regard throughout the entire period... The number of people who came was enormous, until we moved the shiva to the synagogue. People stood in line and in the cold, entire schools came. In New York, the flag was lowered to half-mast, they talked about Omar in the Senate and Congress." – Orna and Ronen Nowtra, the parents of the late Omar | From an interview with "Makor Rishon", 15.3.25
The Ruderman Program invites you to a conference that will address questions of Jewish identity, challenges, and opportunities. In the concluding segment, we will focus on a particularly personal and moving perspective, in which we will host the parents of the late Omar Nowra, who was captured by Hamas and declared an IDF martyr. They will share their perspective on Omar's identity, the complexity of his story, and the broader questions it raises regarding Jewish identity in the current era.
The conference is held from a research-academic approach, and aims to stimulate an in-depth discussion on the broad meaning of Jewish identity, while observing the personal and social experience reflected in Omer's story - from an open and respectful dialogue.
- Date: Tomorrow! Tuesday 18.3.2025
- Location: Student House, University of Haifa
- Participation in the conference is free of charge, but requires advance registration.
