City Center • The Dick Family's All-In-One Incarnation

The City Center building is located in the northern part of the German colony, at the intersection of Ben Gurion Boulevard and Jaffa Streets and its address is 6 Ben Gurion Boulevard. Dick's Department Store According to the 1882 map of the German colony, on the lot on which the City Center building was built, the large trading house of the Templar family Abram Duck was located. The Dick family was one of the wealthiest in the German colony and their residence - at 8 Ben Gurion Boulevard - was one of the largest and most luxurious in the colony. Later, their sons, who continued the family tradition, were among the largest merchants in Haifa. The family ran a kind of department store that sold a variety of products, from everyday products to agricultural machinery. Among its regular customers were also Jewish settlers from the northern colonies. Agronomist Aaron Aaronson from Zichron Yaakov worked for a time as an agent at Dick's trading house, before devoting himself to his scientific and political work. In a 1984 photograph of...

Sea of Milk: The Mysterious Natural Phenomenon on the Shores of Haifa ◄ Watch

(lives here on the beaches) – Haifa residents have noticed a unique phenomenon off the city’s shores – the water is taking on a whitish-bluish hue, especially in the area opposite the cable car in Bat Galim. For years, various hypotheses have been put forward regarding the phenomenon, ranging from pollution to the possibility of chemicals in the water. Now experts are explaining that this is a completely natural phenomenon.

What causes this phenomenon?

In consultation with senior geologists, it was found that the reason for the white color of the water is the limestone found in the carbonate rocks on Mount Carmel. When heavy rains fall, limestone particles are released from the rocks and washed into the sea, which is what creates the whitish color of the water. There is no danger in this phenomenon and it does not indicate any pollution.

The effect of water currents on the color of the water

Large limestone rocks, familiar to anyone who has lived in Haifa for many years, cover the western side of the Carmel and extend all the way to Stella Maris. Over time, sea currents stir the limestone sand on the beach, causing it to wash into the water, creating the phenomenon over and over again. This is a natural process similar to the formation of karst sinkholes in various places around the world.

The old fishermen remember

Veteran fishermen and people living near the coast say that before the roads and interchanges were built on the mountain, white flows were visible from the mountain to the sea. In the past, they reveal, the material was called "tin," but in reality it is microscopic chalk dust that mixed with the seawater and created the special hue.

A natural phenomenon unique to Haifa

Tests conducted on the sea water in the area showed that after a few hours, the chalk particles sink to the bottom, and the water returns to its normal state. The "White Sea" phenomenon is part of Haifa's unique geological texture and, as mentioned, is not dangerous. It reminds us that the city's shores hide fascinating and beautiful natural phenomena, some of which are still unknown to the general public.
