(haipo) - Nature, in all its glory, sometimes reveals itself in surprising ways, especially when it comes to migratory birds in the skies of the Land of Israel. Today, March 13, 2025, the residents of Haifa watched the spectacular sight of a huge flock of storks that began their journey to Europe, flying extremely low over the rooftops of the city. This sight arouses curiosity and therefore it is necessary to understand the meaning behind this phenomenon of flight in the spring season. In the video, you will see the storks flying south and lingering over the Kabbir neighborhood and Nahal Lotem, as if they were confused about their direction, but don't worry, after a few minutes they overcame the strong east wind and continued their journey north.
The reason for the low flight
The storks that soared in the city's skies did not soar high, but flew close to the roofs of the houses, due to a barometric ridge and strong easterly winds that dominated the area. These conditions prevented them from taking advantage of rising air currents, known as "thermals," that normally allow migratory birds to soar to heights. In such a reality, the storks had to face a real challenge: they struggled with the air currents at low altitude, a fascinating phenomenon.

Spring and Spring Again – a Critical Migration Period
In the spring, many migratory birds, including storks, begin their migration from Africa to Europe, where the weather is gradually warming up. The storks, which have spent a warm and restful winter in Africa, head north for a long and challenging journey. The goal of the migration is to reach Europe, where they will find the perfect conditions to establish their nest and bring new offspring into the world. The storks will only head back to Africa after they have matured, at the end of the summer and the beginning of the following winter.

Migration Routes in Israel – A Bridge Between Two Continents
Israel is a major and important route for migratory birds on their way from Africa to Europe. According to data, there are two main routes that the birds take on their way: the first is along the coast between Ashkelon and Rosh Hanikra, where storks often pass over Haifa. The second, no less important route runs through the Syrian-African Rift, from Eilat to the Lebanon region, where the birds pass over the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee and Lake Hula. This phenomenon makes Israel a particularly important region in understanding bird migration patterns, especially at this time of year.

Hasidic flocks in the skies of Haifa – a unique natural spectacle
The video filmed today in the skies of Haifa shows storks battling the east winds, making the city a spectacular focal point for watching migratory birds. This phenomenon is not only a spectacular visual spectacle, but is also an opportunity to understand the complex world of migration of storks and migratory birds in general. Viewers of this spectacle can learn a lot about climate, weather and their impact on animal life, and especially how environmental conditions affect the speed and efficiency of migration.
This experience, which invites the public to be impressed by the natural phenomenon in the city's skies, marks the unique connection between Haifa and the world's wildlife, and emphasizes the importance of Israel as a central route for migratory birds.
The storks flew right past our house.
It was an amazing sight.
Beautiful article and photographs.
A unique natural phenomenon, and photographing it in real time is not obvious. Well done Yaron.
