City Center • The Dick Family's All-In-One Incarnation

The City Center building is located in the northern part of the German colony, at the intersection of Ben Gurion Boulevard and Jaffa Streets and its address is 6 Ben Gurion Boulevard. Dick's Department Store According to the 1882 map of the German colony, on the lot on which the City Center building was built, the large trading house of the Templar family Abram Duck was located. The Dick family was one of the wealthiest in the German colony and their residence - at 8 Ben Gurion Boulevard - was one of the largest and most luxurious in the colony. Later, their sons, who continued the family tradition, were among the largest merchants in Haifa. The family ran a kind of department store that sold a variety of products, from everyday products to agricultural machinery. Among its regular customers were also Jewish settlers from the northern colonies. Agronomist Aaron Aaronson from Zichron Yaakov worked for a time as an agent at Dick's trading house, before devoting himself to his scientific and political work. In a 1984 photograph of...

Is Haifa becoming the city of pigs again?

A renewed increase in reports of wild boars in the city

(haipo) – After a period of significant decline in the presence of wild boars throughout Haifa, residents are once again reporting frequent encounters – and this time, not with isolated individuals, but with actual herds. Is the city returning to the peak days of the boar phenomenon?

Herds of pigs

Residents of various neighborhoods in the city have recently been documenting large groups of pigs, sometimes eight or more. These sightings raise questions about whether Haifa is returning to the era when it was called the "city of pigs."

Over the past few months, the city's efforts seemed to be bearing fruit, with the number of encounters with pigs having dropped significantly since the change of government in the city. Residents reported a marked improvement, and many felt that the problem that had plagued Haifa in recent years had been resolved. But now, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

"Again, they are afraid to walk in the evening"

One of the city residents toldhaipo: "Suddenly, after a few months of silence, we saw pigs again. Not one or two, but a whole herd crossing the street near our house. It takes us back to the times when we were afraid to go for an evening walk."

Other residents say that after months of almost no presence, the pigs are reappearing on the streets – at first these were encounters with single pigs, and later in larger groups, sometimes 4–5 individuals, and sometimes even 8–9 pigs together.

"The number of calls to the hotline is still low"

In previous articles published in Haifa, the Haifa Municipality noted that the number of calls to the municipal hotline regarding pigs remained significantly lower compared to the same period in previous years. However, the municipality emphasizes that they continue to use all possible means to reduce the phenomenon.

Between public safety and animal welfare

The increasing presence of pigs throughout the city continues to spark debate among residents. Some are concerned about the phenomenon and warn of the dangers it poses, especially in areas near schools and kindergartens. "If they start hanging around educational institutions again like they did in the past, it will become dangerous. The municipality must act as soon as possible to prevent a return to the situation that existed two years ago," says one resident.

On the other hand, animal rights activists argue that solutions must be found that do not include dilution and killing. "The pigs are here not because they want to harm the residents, but because they have lost their natural habitat," says one activist. "We need to learn how to live alongside them and find solutions that respect both the residents and the animals."

What to expect?

At present, it is unclear whether this is a trend that will increase, or just a temporary phenomenon. In any case, it seems that at this point the public discourse surrounding the issue of pigs in Haifa is still far from over.

    • Those who want to let animals live should recognize that, in addition to wild boars, there are hundreds of other animal species that are suffering and their habitats and food are being destroyed by the overpopulation of wild boars in the wild.
So if you really understand ecology, you will be in favor of thinning out the wild boar population to let the animals live.

  1. Chatterbox: "The pigs are here not because they want to harm the residents, but because they have lost their natural habitat"

They didn't lose their habitat, they simply multiplied beyond their natural number in the absence of predators. And they lost their fear of humans!

Our role is to act as predators to restore the numerical balance, as well as to restore their reluctance to enter residential areas, meaning that hunting should be within the boundaries of residential areas, with the carcasses left in the field for a few days before being collected so that the pigs learn that it is dangerous to approach these areas.

  2. They must not be murdered! God heard them first! The forces of the living universe hear the cries of pain of animals and send punishment to man.

  3. Why contact the hotline at all? I contacted them about homeless people who sit in the center of Carmel doing their business and collecting alms. They sent me a message: Your inquiry regarding waste disposal has been processed. I reported pigs on Cowders Street and near the supermarket in the Stella shopping center, and there is no response.

  4. You are the ones who encourage and are responsible for the mass murder of pigs in Haifa.
Stop exacerbating the problem that hasn't existed for a long time. We haven't seen a single pig, because they murdered them all, including the nursing mothers, and sentenced their puppies to death by starvation.
There are a million and one problems in Haifa that are worth addressing, like why aren't sidewalks paved in neighborhoods prone to disaster, where dozens of cats are run over and die in agony, despite the residents' requests.

  5. I don't ring the bell anymore. I used to ring the bell because I was scared. Today I'm used to it. The number of pigs hasn't changed. Every evening the pigs walk down the stairs in front of my window. You're welcome to set up cameras and watch.

  6. The solution is to bury trash cans and clean the streets (in Nesher City, which lives in the forest, this is what they did and it helps)

  7. I see that in our strange country "progressive" has become a derogatory term so I just have to explain something.
Progressive comes from the word "progress," which in Hebrew means "process."
If there weren't progressives before us in history, we would probably still be living like wild animals.
Let's say the pigs that roam your city, or more accurately, according to evolution, like monkeys.
You didn't have the houses you live in now.
Maybe it's worth listening to progressive people a little because only processes lead to real solutions.

    • That's okay, even the best dictators talked about the progress and advancement they bring to their country –
Why hide the fact that it's actually an inverted nickname for the worst and most extreme movements that have caused the most suffering in human history?

  8. Haifa is a city of evildoers. Wild boars are slaughtered throughout the city. In the place where the Ministry of Agriculture is located. The lazy one will spay and neuter them, thus reducing the number of pigs. He prefers to shoot them in the head, even mothers with puppies. So don't be surprised when the people of Hebron slaughter dogs. We are no better than them.

  9. For anyone who thinks that the only thing pigs do is stand by garbage cans and turn them over. They should wake up. Personally, I wish every beautiful soul would chase a pig after them and bring their other one behind them with a threatening look in their eyes and put them into a trauma of fear of pigs. Unless you manage to organize a transfer, there is nothing to talk about at all. No one is looking to kill a population of animals.

    • For example, I am more afraid of female citizens who talk about transfer and beauty (a gentle word for "leftists") than I am of pigs. Even their drunken slobber, with the threatening look in their eyes, scares me more than pigs with a similar look.

  10. Only continuous suppression of reproduction will be effective, reducing the population and ensuring that those remaining will have enough food in the natural area. Killing only clears habitats within one breeding season will result in higher survival rates than usual, because there is more food available.

  11. I live on disability because a wild boar attacked me. I just went out to throw out the trash. I'm locked in a house. A never-ending nightmare. I'm in post-traumatic stress from this shit. The nightmares, the anxieties, and the pain that never stop. Yona Yahav made the mistake that Klish made, and that's dilution. As soon as you dilute them, they multiply more. How stupid.

    • The problem is that they don't thin out enough. Ultimately, the rate of thinning can outpace the rate of reproduction.

  12. People here have lost their way. Pigs should not enter the city under any circumstances. They should eat food from nature and not human waste. It is a mistake that they come to the city. Since they are coming, they should simply be sterilized. Slowly they will disappear or return to nature where their place is safer. And those who want to live with pigs can go live in the forest…

    • We live with baboons, even if we have no choice and moving to the forest won't help, because they are everywhere.

    • The problem is that the only place they had natural became a city.
We took their natural place without thinking about the consequences.
One simple solution is landfill bins, for example, to avoid attracting them to bins that they can turn into, but in any case they lack a place to live because they built buildings for them where their home used to be.
There are certainly precedents for this elsewhere in the world.
You can check what is being done there and do the same.
What is clear is that hunting not only didn't help, it's also not a pleasant solution for anyone. Sorry for being such a "nice guy."
      At least not slime.

  13. A live newspaper here, you have a significant part in the situation you describe!!
For years you have been publishing false and one-sided articles, inciting an entire public and creating unnecessary and destructive panic.
The damage you caused is enormous - both to the wild boars and to the residents!
Live here, you are partners in crime!!

    *Long live the trash newspaper‼️*

  14. Obviously you didn't understand that the more you thin them out, the more they multiply? Instead of finding a solution for them to survive, I tried the easy way! Murder!!!!!!

    • They were warned, examples from the world were given, but the baboon boss wanted blood and that's what he got.

  15. They're actually cute, it's nice to have wild animals every now and then. You can't destroy more and more open spaces and be surprised that wild animals don't stay in a limited area.

    • You are a genius!
King of CEO complaints and lack of solutions!
I bet your mother that you're one of those people who feeds pigs in the yard and then complains like the last of the wicked.
      You crazy progressive!

    • Attaching a picture of the Israeli government. Only pigs, human, you will find (will you find?) there.

  16. I live on Shimshon Street above the valley and in the past I saw herds of pigs sunbathing in the valley from the balcony of my house. Once I also witnessed piglets giving birth. After several months of not watching the pigs, the phenomenon is returning. This morning I saw them. I'm afraid our unwanted neighbors are back.

    • Israel Katz should direct the IDF to enter the wadi by land to prevent them from continuing to sunbathe and reproduce. A shipment of explosives is just arriving from the US.

  17. Maybe enough already?!!! One might think, enough of publishing another piece of crap that will only encourage killing!! They do nothing but overturn a few garbage cans!! We leave them no place to live with the greed of the contractors and real estate people! Get over it, they are just looking for sources of food and water from all the forests we have destroyed for them and the pollution damage we humans have left! Let them find solutions to garbage cans in the ground or places designated for feeding, there are humane ways but it is easier to sow destruction, and it also does not require a lot of thought. Get sick of this humanity!!!

    • Citizens demand blood. It has become popular in recent years. Correct and humane solutions are for "leftists."

    • I can't stand clichés, but at least they didn't shoot a wild boar screaming and bleeding to death in front of her cubs in front of my daughter. And that's just one case out of many.
