(haipo) – Let's start from the end – Israel has no tsunami warning and as of this writing there is no tsunami wave on its way to Israel. So why are emergency agencies in Israel still preparing and refreshing their tsunami defense procedures?
All the details here…

The Escape from Santorini
In recent days, reports of an escape from the small and magical island of Santorini have been increasing. The gradual evacuation of the island was carried out after numerous reports of earthquakes and other signs that raise concerns among geologists about a significant volcanic event on the small island, which has a volcano next to it. This volcano collapsed several thousand years ago and, according to experts, the collapse created a tsunami wave that hit the Mediterranean coast with force and destroyed the civilizations that lived along its shores.

Tsunami damage and volcanic eruption
Dramatic images from around the world show the destructive power of nature. Authentic footage documents the aftermath of a tsunami on the islands of Ko Phi Phi and Phuket in Thailand, alongside images from the volcano on Santorini. Islanders have shared their experiences with tourists, expressing their hope that awareness will reduce the scale of the next disaster.

Santorini: A History of Destruction
The island, considered one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world, has a dark past. The Santorini islands are actually the remains of a caldera* – A result of powerful volcanic activity that caused the collapse of large parts of the island in the past.
One of the dramatic events in history is related to the theory that a massive tsunami wave, created by the eruption of the local volcano, crossed the sea and hit Crete, where it was attributed to the destruction of the advanced Minoan civilization.
Map – Santorini Island – Caldera
*Volcano caldera A caldera is a large bowl-shaped depression or basin formed at the top of a volcano by the collapse of a magma chamber after a major eruption. A caldera can be formed by the rapid emptying of a magma chamber, when the ground above it is no longer supported and collapses inward.
The difference between Caldera And Crater: While a volcanic vent is the opening from which volcanic materials are emitted and is usually relatively small, a caldera is a much larger depression formed as a result of a structural collapse of the ground.
The famous caldera of the island of Santorini forms a steep crescent-shaped slope above the sea in its southern part.

Global danger and impact on Israel
A volcanic eruption in Santorini could cause tsunami waves that would also affect the coasts of Israel. In the past, tsunamis have been recorded that hit coastal cities in the country – including Jaffa, Acre and Haifa. The pyroclastic cloud that could be created in a powerful eruption could also reach our region and have serious consequences.

Is Israel ready?
In Israel, as in other places in the world, there is no guarantee of complete protection against tsunamis. Although thousands of warning signs have been installed along the coasts, they are a limited solution. In tsunami-stricken countries such as Japan and Hawaii, advanced warning systems have been deployed, but in Israel similar solutions have not yet been implemented on a large scale.

Sensors and monitoring stations – the solution for the future?
The deadly tsunamis of recent years, such as the one that struck Fukushima in 2011 and also caused a nuclear disaster, have led to the development of advanced sensor systems around the world. Monitoring stations scattered on active volcanoes, including Santorini, operate systems that monitor toxic gas emissions and earthquakes 24/7.

A lesson from history – living alongside danger
Despite the concerns, life in Israel continues to proceed as usual. Israel is not defined as a tsunami-stricken country like Japan, and therefore most of the public is unaware of the possible dangers. However, it is good to be aware of the possible scenarios and prepare accordingly.

What to do if and when a tsunami warning occurs?
The first thing to do in the event of a tsunami is to quickly move away from the coast and to higher ground.!!!
In addition, it is advisable to stay away from the coastal strip, especially in areas where the coast is very flat, for example the beaches of Kiryat Haim, Kiryat Yam, Bat Galim, Neve David and Shaar Aliya.

Hi Moti. Wow, what a fascinating article with interesting implications. Thank you for your innovations. What a professional, genuine article that includes many interesting aspects with deep layers. Thank you for this, this is a dear and dedicated man.
Dear Moti, thank you for such an interesting article that provides such important and critical information for us readers. Good luck! See you on safe shores 🙂
What does it mean to renew our procedures?
Did rescue forces practice? No.
Have they deployed new measures, sensors, observations, anything? No.
Just because they sat over a cup of coffee and passed the time, doesn't mean they did anything.
The Top of the Carmel B&Bs – a vacation complex
I was very impressed by the article and the photos, since I have toured with groups in volcanoes in all sorts of places around the world and seen the damage that can be caused by mountains collapsing and cities being wiped off the face of the earth, and since we saw what the tsunami caused in Thailand - Phuket and Japan, I think that the State of Israel should make some kind of awareness through people who are experts in the subject, among those who have experienced it, schools in places where people gather, and especially people who live in places close to the coasts and possibly in the country in general - about behavior and protection against earthquakes and tsunamis, and not tell me it's not possible.
It will happen because it is impossible what can develop in the soil - we also need to work on early warnings before an incident occurs and issue alarms different from war or missile alerts so that the public knows that it is an earthquake or tsunami alarm and can protect themselves in time.
Wishing everyone good and peaceful days
A tsunami will affect valleys like the Beit Shean Valley, which sits on the Syrian-African Rift. All the low-lying places are relatively safe, like Mount Carmel or Gilboa, and Kfar Tabor is just putting people in unnecessary trouble.
Greece has about 12 countries neighboring its maritime territory, half of which are much closer than Israel.
In none of them did the "tsunami warning, what to do if there is a tsunami" panic begin as the media has created here.
The neurosis, exhaustion, and intimidation for the sake of hollow ratings – only exists here.
We had an exceptional decade.
After 2016, we jumped straight to 2018.
This is how we were saved from the earthquake of the 90-year cycle that was supposed to come according to the "menmahim" scares in 2017.
If we think positively, it is positive and no tsunami will reach us. It is important to be prepared. It does not hurt. On the other hand, there is no tsunami in the country of the Basotho. Let's hope for better days.
The recent eruptions of Santorini did not cause tsunamis and were not as powerful as the Minoan eruption. It is not necessarily certain that if an eruption occurs, it will be on the order of magnitude of the Minoan eruption.
hello generation
Definitely relatively weak tremors.
But this is reason enough for the government there to take emergency action.
Right now, everything is fine in Israel, but we must remember...Santorini is a barrel of explosives geologically, and just as happened on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, it could also happen on Santorini.
Will this cleanse some Gazans?
What racism!
I wish he would clean up all the right-wing scumbags.
