Sewage leaks onto the sidewalk, rats hop by the trash can – everyday life on one street in Haifa…

(haipo) – Residents of Yad Labanim Street in Haifa have been suffering from a serious sewage problem for a long time, with sewage leaking from one of the buildings onto the public sidewalk, leading to ongoing discomfort and a real health risk. The sidewalk is filled with sewage and feces, and this becomes a sanitary threat for residents and passersby.

One of the residents, who contacted the Haifa website, says that he contacted the Haifa Municipality to report the problem, but encountered difficulties. "I contacted the municipality about the matter, but they refused to approve the complaint and handle it unless I identified myself and provided personal details," he says. I gave my name and personal phone number, but the municipality also demanded an ID card and an exact address, and I am not interested in sharing this information. Beyond that, where is the municipality in all this? The sidewalk is a public space and this problem is a serious sanitary hazard."

During the conversation with Haifa, he also told of an unfortunate incident in which a woman walking on the sidewalk slipped on feces. "It was embarrassing and sad, I immediately went to help her," he notes. "How can such a situation exist in the city of Haifa in 2025? If we, the residents, don't report it - where is the municipality? Where are the cleaning workers? Where is the enforcement? That's their job, not mine."

The same resident also talks about a rat problem in the area, which he encountered near one of the trash cans on the street. "After I reported the problem, the municipality came and hung a sign announcing that pest control had been carried out, but what kind of pest control is there here? The rats are still jumping around in the street as if nothing had happened. I don't understand how they claim that this is an effective pest control."

The repeated complaints may indicate neglect, with no proper response provided to sanitary hazards and basic maintenance problems, even though this is a public area and these phenomena constitute a danger to public health. Residents report a difficult daily feeling of a lack of care for them and their needs.

The Haifa Municipality gave a response
:
"The General Supervision Division acted on the spot and issued notices of demand to the property owners - a warning to repair the hazard. If they do not do what is required, fines will be issued to all tenants.

Regarding the pest control, the municipality responded:: "The Environmental Protection Law prohibits the spreading of poison in open areas, forests, etc. The Haifa Municipality carried out pest control at the aforementioned address, in accordance with the provisions of the law, in the sewage and drainage systems only. Pest control in private areas (where the municipality is prohibited from operating) is carried out by private exterminators who are also obligated to carry out the pest control in accordance with the provisions of the law."

  1. Thanks to your newspaper, all the pigs were killed after the smear and intimidation campaign. The entire budget went there. Don't complain about anything now.

  2. Regarding the rats, if you contact the director of the Haifa Health Bureau at the same time, maybe something will change.
They also deal with sanitation issues and sanitary deficiencies.

  3. Yahav, where are you?!
Do you want to continue referring to the Yad Labanim Halisa area and down to the city's ghetto?

    A disgrace of neglect.

  4. After all the explanations, all that's left for the municipality to do is collect taxes, the rest will be done by the city residents.
