The court is currently hearing the case of the indifferent and reckless murder of the late Israeli cycling champion Guy Timor (21), who was run over to death by Nachman Khoury on June 6, 2024. Timor was run over to death while riding his bicycle during a morning workout near the Nahora intersection. The tragic accident cut short the life of a promising and respected athlete. Testimony indicates that Khoury got into a Mini Cooper without ever having obtained a driver's license and began a wild ride while under the influence of hard drugs and alcohol, crossed a red light and hit Guy Timor.
115 regular cyclists were killed in the last decade (2024-2015) in road accidents, an average of 12 each year, one fatality each month, according to data from the Or Yarok association based on CBS data.
The data also shows that 227 ordinary cyclists are injured in road accidents each year, 83 of whom are seriously injured - one in every three cyclists injured.
Adv. Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of the Or Yarok Association: "The number of casualties in regular bicycle accidents is still high, even though many choose to ride electric vehicles. The number of casualties is high due to the lack of safety infrastructure that would provide safe riding conditions for riders. The Ministry of Transport and Road Safety does not protect riders. The lack of separated paths causes great concern about the daily use and riding of bicycles. Investing in safety infrastructure for riders is necessary to reduce the number of accidents and encourage the use of bicycles as a green and healthy means of transportation. We must promote the construction of a nationwide network of bicycle paths and separate them from motor vehicle lanes in order to increasingly encourage daily use of bicycles. Only in this way can we prevent the next cyclist being killed."

Proven solutions to improve the safety of ordinary cyclists
There are several proven solutions to improve the safety of regular cyclists. Dedicated infrastructure for cyclists through separated bicycle paths is an excellent and accepted solution in many cities around the world. Paving a network of bicycle paths physically separated from the road where motor vehicles travel reduces the risk of cyclist injury. In addition, slowing and restraining traffic through intersections and traffic circles will lead to strengthening the safety of cyclists. Also, improving lighting during dark hours will increase the visibility of cyclists.
Encouraging the use of high-visibility clothing, including reflectors and active lighting on bicycles, will allow drivers to see their riders from a greater distance. In addition, awareness should be increased among drivers of the presence of cyclists on the road and the importance of keeping a distance from them. Encouraging the use of warning systems in vehicles will allow cyclists to be identified at an early stage and, as a result, keep a distance.
Tips for safe riding:
- Using head protection: Studies show that two-thirds of cyclist deaths are due to head injuries. Therefore, a well-fitting helmet should be worn every time you ride, as it can often prevent head injuries and can be the difference between life and death.
- Use of body protectors: Before riding, you should equip yourself with body protectors such as knee and elbow pads that can cushion the impact in the event of an accident and prevent more serious injury.
- Ensuring good visibility: During the dark hours and in the mornings, one should ride with luminous clothing and attach reflectors to the bicycle and helmet to ensure that the rider is seen by car drivers.
- Choosing the safest route – It is recommended to plan the cycling route to your destination in advance so that it is the safest route and not the fastest - a safe route will be one that consists of as many designated cycling paths as possible and as little cycling on main roads and crossing roads in general.
