(haipo) - The residents of Customs Street in Haifa are still besieged in their homes due to the floods that hit the city. At the beginning of the week, we published an article about the flooding in certain areas of Haifa, with one of the most prominent being the difficult situation on Customs Street, where entire families remain trapped in their homes, unable to get out or escape the water. As of Tuesday 31/12/24, the situation has not changed, and the residents feel discouraged and isolated.
The floods in recent days are the result of a powerful winter system that hit the country, and they are not limited only to Haifa. However, the hard feeling is how in 2025, there are still areas where people are besieged in their homes due to flooding, as is happening in Haifa.
On 29/12/24, it was announced that the Haifa municipality had been preparing for the winter for a long time. Among the steps taken - cleaning the drainage openings and canals along dozens of kilometers in the city, and checking the integrity of the pumping systems and sensors in the underground passages. In addition, the municipality said that it continues to improve the municipal drainage systems throughout the city.
In the case of Customs Street, these are buildings that are at a lower level than the street and the port adjacent to it, which does not allow the free flow of water towards the port. At this point, the municipality placed a diesel pump designed to flow the excess water from the street to the port area. However, the drainage pipe in the port was unable to cope with the unusual amounts of water that started flowing in the last few weeks.
The municipality announced that a total upgrade of the drainage system in the area is planned, as part of the urban sea front project, with the aim of solving the problem in a thorough and long-term way. At the same time, despite all the measures taken, the topographical structure of Haifa and the increasing number of extreme events around the world, make it difficult to deal with the floods, especially when the amount of precipitation arrives in short periods of time.
The municipality said:As we reported yesterday, during the last few days record amounts of rain have been falling in Haifa and have not stopped even this morning. On Customs Street there are two buildings at a lower level than the street and the port adjacent to it and prevent the flow of water into the port area. The municipality operates a pump at the site designed to flow the excess water into the port area, however the drainage pipe in the port is unable to overcome the abnormal amounts of water. The municipality's water drainage activity continued this morning as well.
Thanks to all these, the water level in the place has already dropped and the residents can leave the place. In the meantime, the municipality is preparing for a total upgrade of the drainage system on the spot as part of the urban seafront project in a way that will lead to a fundamental solution to the problem."
The solution of the municipality of Haifa.
Not bad, a few years and this area will become the sea front
When will the Municipality of Haifa and its employees simply perform their duties faithfully and make sure ahead of time that *there will not* be headlines like this every year at the first rain?
as in the government. Warming chairs instead of caring for the public good. There is no place left without corruption and hedonism in this country.
Customs Street The neighbors suffer every winter from flooding, lack of cleanliness on behalf of the municipality, a street sweeper or a cleaning worker has not entered the neighborhood since 1950 until now. But property tax they know how to collect on time and also raise our cupboards it's time not to pay property tax this whole country like any third world country and worse
Shame and shame, neighborhoods and roads throughout the country are blocked by rainwater, let's not talk about bloody roads that no one touches and repairs, here is Miri Regev, you have an opportunity to make a real change, pick up the glove or you will be like everyone else.
