The orange bins are gone • "What do we do with the trash now? Store it at home? Drive it around Haifa?"

(haipo) - In recent weeks, the Haifa municipality decided to remove some of the orange recycling bins in the city, a move that sparked outrage among many residents, especially those who are careful about separating waste and recycling. "If you want to encourage us to recycle, why are they taking our bins?" Many residents wonder. "This decision hurts motivation and the ability to recycle effectively."

to encourage a change in the habits of the residents

In recent years, many local authorities in Israel have been active in promoting the issue of recycling, placing designated bins, including the orange bin, intended for aluminum packaging, beverage cartons, plastic bags, cardboard, Styrofoam, cans, snack bags, personal care products, shampoo bottles and deodorants. The main goal was to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill and to encourage a positive change in the habits of the residents.

Haifa was considered one of the cities that invested heavily in placing orange bins throughout the city, and even took care of distributing orange sacks, accompanied by detailed explanations and instructions. Many residents adopted the move and made sure to separate the household waste. But in recent months the policy has been changed in the Haifa municipality and some of the orange bins have been removed, or moved to other locations, on the grounds that this is a step to improve the appearance of the public space.

without prior notice

A resident who lives on Tschernihovsky Street said in a conversation: "I was surprised to find out that the orange bins were removed without prior notification. When I contacted the municipality, I did not receive a clear answer. A municipal worker I met on the street told me it was a new policy designed to improve the appearance of the streets. Now I wonder where we are supposed to recycle? what? Do I now have to store the garbage at my house? Or drive with it in my car to find a place to dump it? It just doesn't make sense."

What do they do in other countries?

In developed countries, recycling bins are usually not placed on the streets, but at the same time, the authorities work intensively to encourage residents to have a number of dedicated bins in their homes for separating waste - dry waste, wet waste and cartons. The waste is removed on predetermined days, which ensures order and cleanliness in the public space. Is this model suitable for Haifa as well? It is possible, but at least for now, it seems that the decision in question harms the residents' ability to recycle.

The Haifa Municipality informed Haifa:
"The Haifa Municipality works frequently to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the streets, to improve pedestrian accessibility and to prevent wildlife nuisances throughout the city. In this context, a change was recently made in the locations of the orange recycling bins, while removing a number of bins, which were located in areas where they created congestion or damaged the quality of the space Residents can find out the location of the recycling bin closest to their home on the municipality's website."

  1. As usual in Haifa… If the municipality does something, it is always against logic or against the interests of the residents!! Dreamed.. Every time I reached the blue bin, it was full. Every time I reached the orange bin, it was really, really full…
Until they taught us to recycle... suddenly they make it harder for us!!

  2. The dumbest municipality in the universe. Mayor Saroch, who is in prison. The city is bursting with garbage swimming in the sewers and they are still removing trash cans, a junta of thieves, there is no nuisance of wild animals, you are the nuisance!!

  3. nonsense. First the paper recycling bins disappeared and now this. Is the appearance of the city more important than circulation? Maybe you will take care of repairing the sidewalks, roads and other faults and do what is necessary. Appearance is not everything

  4. With us, the blue bins and the written ones have disappeared. A very problematic move by the municipality. If the large bins are problematic, the small bins that were in each building will be returned immediately. Recycling is critical and without appropriate bins what do you expect us to do?!

  5. The solution is to bring the garbage to the municipality. Lack of consideration for the residents when taxes and property taxes do increase.

  6. The blue bins for collecting paper and newspapers have also disappeared in my area, there were 3 bins in our garbage room until the orange bin was taken out to the street under the pretext of the pigs and in the last few weeks the blue bin has also disappeared in the houses next to mine.
The orange bin is at the end of the street, and it's hard for me to reach it.

  7. The lack of bins leads the citizen to look for solutions that are not always suitable for maintaining cleanliness. The cleaning workers don't like them either.

    • There is not a single orange bin on any street in Zerubal. No young Zeko and Gal will carry up to hornbills with trash for recycling

  8. Banana country. The beautiful sleeping city of Haifa
takes out the garbage cans from the city streets,
    now what?
    The pigs are in trouble.
And the city hall works properly, hahaha.
    Kudos to the city council.
    Exemplary.

  9. A few days ago a message came out - from the municipality of K. Ata that they placed orange bins - throughout the Kariya... maybe these are the bins that took them from you and transferred them to K. Ata...

  10. Only in Haifa they make sure to do everything that harms the ecology and the residents. Killing pigs, removing recycling bins. The worst municipality in the country.

  11. Not only the oranges are gone, the blue ones are gone too. The municipality stops recycling. There is no chance that elderly/disabled people will walk around Haifa to throw paperwork into the old bins that have a narrow opening.
Haifa municipality makes us stop recycling

    • I have a question for the live system here:
What do we really do with the garbage suitable for the orange bins that we made sure to put, exactly according to the instructions, in those bins?
      Where is he directed?
      Who appointed him there?
Where do different types of packaging go?
Only the truth, without beautiful stories of what should be, but what actually takes place, in practice!
      Tell us please.
      Thanks

  12. Those square bins were very ugly
    They block sidewalks
And they were open so they smelled very bad
It should be composted, but in bins buried under the ground with a whip lid for inconspicuous garbage disposal. As they do in new neighborhoods and in all countries.

  13. The orange bins are gone but in their place and this has been checked and I have evidence that the director of the road department started to hang direction signs either not in the right place or in a certain place that he used the same sign several times. For example, in the composition of Pinsky and Keller, I have a huge story for you on the subject of signage and parking in Kafir 052-3653525

  14. It is unfortunate to hear that some of the bins are gone.
True, in the USA, New Jersey, every few days there is a removal of garbage by type.
Every family has a closed garage and the bins must be inside it.
There is no display of bins in the public space.
In Haifa, a city saturated with construction, there is not a garage for every family, therefore, it makes sense for the bins to be in a public space.
A possibility that I think we should consider:
Construction of designated spaces for each type of garbage, in each compound or street, according to the colors of the bins of course so that it will be convenient for all of us to continue recycling for a better future for the next generation...
In this way, the aesthetics of the city streets will be preserved.
And on this occasion - one should consider addressing the issue of dog excrement on the city streets.
This is unbearable in my eyes...

  15. The bins are huge and block sidewalks or parking lots. Who thought of this thing? Good thing there won't be any orange bins at all
