A window to the Mediterranean Sea: a new monument commemorates the 'Arlozorov' immigration ship on the beach in Haifa ► Watch

(haipo) - An impressive monument, in memory of the ship "Chaim Arlozorov" (or "Uloa"), was laid down today (Tuesday 10/12/24) at Bat Galim beach in Haifa. The ship Arlozorov, which arrived at Israel's shores on February 28, 1947, with 1,398 emigrants and about 40 crew members on board, inscribed another chapter in the history of emigration to the Land of Israel. The ship encountered resistance from the British government, who seized its passengers and sent them to detention camps in Cyprus.

The monument is the work of the sculptor Moshik Zorea from Ma'agan Michael, it is made of a large stone, in the upper part there is a ship-like window - a symbol of the view of the sea and the story of the refugees who sought to reach the safe shore.

The remains of the ship submerged in the sea

The monument was placed on Hulda Gurevich Promenade, in front of the remains of the ship found on the seabed, about 70 meters from where it came ashore.

The commemoration project is the fruit of the initiative of Dr. Sharoni Feldman, a second generation of Ma'afil, and Prof. Udi Galili, a maritime archaeologist from the University of Haifa. About a year ago, an underwater memorial plaque was placed on the seabed, near the remains of the ship, which became a popular destination for divers and swimmers.

The dedication ceremony of the monument is expected to be held in February 2025, in the presence of the mayor and in the presence of the families of the immigrants.
