Academician Gordon celebrates the Day of Awareness for the Rights of People with Disabilities with a purple light and the establishment of an accessibility unit
The Gordon Academic building will be illuminated every evening, throughout the coming week (from the Tschernihovski Street side), with purple light, as part of the "Purple Night" project and on the occasion of the International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which will be celebrated on 3.12.24.
'Lila Segol' started in Israel about five years ago and is being led by the Lottery, the "Shavim" website and the Center for Local Government. Hundreds of buildings in Israel will be illuminated with purple light, the color associated with the disabled community in the world, with the aim of raising awareness of the issue of integrating people with disabilities in society, in the community and at work. Last year the 'Purple Night' events were canceled due to the war, but this year they are returning in light of their importance and in light of the fact that since October 7 (23) more than 80,000 Israelis have been added who are physically and mentally injured.
Gordon Academic is among the first academic institutions in Israel to join this blessed project since its first year, as every day it engraves the theme of integration on its banner. Among the college's students and faculty members with various disabilities who receive support and accompaniment, where 12% of the administrative faculty members are employees with special needs who are integrated into the various departments. Furthermore, the college promotes programs for learners with special needs, including the 'Orot' pre-rehabilitation program that trains graduates on the autistic continuum for independent living. In the first and second degree, there are leading professional departments in Israel that train teaching faculty in the field, and the college also promotes research on the subject and advises governments around the world on the subject of integration.
new! The academy unit is accessible
As part of the extensive activity that Gordon College promotes in the field of equality and accessibility, the 'Accessible Academic Unit' was recently established, led by Dr. Rita Khoury. The unit is not defined only as a service, but as a vision of an egalitarian, inclusive and progressive society under the message "Leading change, creating the future". Investment In students with disabilities, it is an investment in values, worldview, excellence and turning the vision into reality.
The establishment of the unit, as part of the activities of the Dean of Students, is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to create an academic environment that is equal, supportive and adapted to the unique needs of students with disabilities. The unit will be a significant bridge for students facing physical, mental or sensory challenges, will allow them to realize their academic and personal potential and succeed in their studies with equal opportunities. The unit brings together, under one umbrella, various services that have been provided so far to students with disabilities, and also expands them. Among other things, it will offer consulting services, personal accompaniment, psychological and academic consulting, access to digital platforms, academic adjustments and more, and will also promote a network of collaborations with government bodies and social organizations for the purpose of ensuring a support network.
Kudos to Goverden College.
