Renewed presence of pigs in Haifa: are we on our way back to the pig problem?

(Hai Fe) - In recent months it seemed that Haifa was beginning to say goodbye to the phenomenon of pigs in the urban area, but recently many reports from the field indicate otherwise. Residents throughout the city are reporting pigs returning to roam the streets, appearing in yards and overturning trash cans, a phenomenon that raises fears of a return to the days of complex dealing with the phenomenon.

Mayor Yona Yahav, who took office, promised to address the problem within 90 days and indeed succeeded in leading to a significant decrease in the number of pigs roaming in the public space - at least that's what the Haifa Municipality claims.

The data presented by the municipality include a decrease in calls to the municipal hotline and in cases of overturned bins, which they claim indicates the reduction of the hazard.

However, in the last month there has been an increase in the number of reports sent to the Haifa system, about pigs roaming in residential areas, which raises questions and doubts among the residents: Has the budget allocated for the fight run out? Will there be a change in policy? And what does the municipality intend to do to prevent further deterioration?

Officials in the municipality emphasize that the phenomenon is still under control, and that all the efforts put in place are ongoing. However, the addition of new traps is being considered, a move that requires examination and approval by the Nature and Parks Authority. According to officials in the municipality, dealing with the pigs requires a continuous effort and cooperation between the authorities, along with informing the residents about the importance of not leaving food accessible and making sure the garbage cans are closed.

A symbol or a hazard?

The pig problem in Haifa is not only an issue of quality of life, but also an environmental-social issue that requires a balance between the need to maintain the public space and the importance of preserving nature and maintaining biological diversity in the city. While the fight against the pig problem continues, it seems that the residents are required to be patient, and the municipality is required to act more efficiently to ensure the continuity and continuity of the peace achieved in recent months.

The Haifa Municipality informed Lehi Pa:

"The municipality of Haifa acted, as promised, to reduce the conflict between the wild boars and the residents. As a result of this activity, most of the wild boars disappeared from the city's neighborhoods and returned to their natural place in the wadis and the Carmel forests. This fact is also reflected in the small number of inquiries received on the subject in the municipality and in the sharp decline that occurred, among other things, in the overturning of trash cans The garbage by the wild boars.

The Nature and Parks Authority informed Hai Fa regarding the placement of new traps:

"The issue is under review and discussion with the municipality"

A significant decrease in the treatment of pigs and an increase in reports for irresponsible feeding

The activity report for the month of October 2024 for the prevention of conflicts with wild boars in Haifa, published in November 2024, indicates a consistent downward trend in reporting by residents to the urban hotline 106, about incidents of mishaps with wild boars and their observations. However, the logistical challenges arising from the security situation (missile attacks from Lebanon ) influenced the scope of activity of the Haifa Municipality teams.

The report shows that 30 pigs were treated during the month - a figure that reflects a significant decrease compared to previous months. In addition, 19 reports were recorded for irresponsible feeding, a slight increase compared to September, but still low compared to previous years.

The joint venture of the Municipality of Haifa and the Nature and Parks Authority, which began in 2021, continues to show significant progress, as shown in the latest report. Among the main steps taken: reducing food sources and improving sanitation, which include daily emptying of bins, fixing them, and evening cleaning in parks and gardens public, alongside trash removal during the wild boar's activity hours (evening and night).

The data of the report indicate a significant decrease in the reporting of incidents of overturning the bins, which reached a negative peak of only 12 incidents - the lowest since the beginning of the project.

In addition, as part of blocking infiltration routes, rigid fences were installed in problematic areas such as the Nahal Lotem basin, and existing fences were strengthened using metal profiles. GPS tracking of the pigs' activity confirms the effectiveness of the barriers, provided the gates remain closed.

The continuation of the activity within the framework of the project will include increasing public participation, integrating education and information programs, strengthening the blocking systems and the treatment of unruly pigs. Persistence and broad cooperation is required to ensure the success of the project. The municipal effort illustrates how a combination of planning, determined action and community participation can lead to a significant improvement in the fight against the wild boar problem.

  1. Even in old Rome, a huge pig came, came down the hill, crossed Palmach Street and entered the snipers. Destroy them! A heart to heart conversation with the pigs will not move them!

  2. A decrease in reports is due to the desperation of the residents. For example, nothing was ever done in the new Romema neighborhood and yet there was a municipal report that there were no pigs. They never left the neighborhood, never stopped destroying gardens, we just broke down from notifying.

  3. Due to the leakage of pigs into the urban area, wild boar hunting licenses should be allowed for the purpose of thinning, as we know there are permits to hunt wild animals in certain seasons for the purpose of thinning....addresses can be given to hunters who will ambush the pigs for the purpose of hunting until the matter is settled.

  4. The pigs come freely from yard to yard in a complacent house at noon, destroying the decency and it's infuriating.
I don't want them to be killed, but why not castrate or sterilize like with the cats. A little more work

  5. This is what happens when stupid people act in the name of values.
A pig is a very smart animal. If as soon as the first pig arrived in Haifa they would have shot it.
They would not dare to enter.
Once they are in, it is very difficult to get them out.

  6. Let them start making underground bins like in Nesher, then the pigs disappeared because they no longer have anything to look for here...

  7. Because of the war, they did not finish treating. Hope they didn't forget to continue what they started. We have pigs on Vitkin Street every day without any change, destroying decency.

  8. It's time to cause the fall of the pig regime so that you make one pig sick with swine corona or AIDS and then he will infect the rest of the pigs and of course have to destroy them all

  9. Unbelievable. Enough messing with these poor animals. You took everything from them.
The fact that you kill them will only increase the birth rate

  10. Not enough pigs are destroyed. They need to be systematically and massively destroyed. It is a danger to humans. It is impossible to take it easy and let pigs breed in public space. It is not possible that people are afraid to go out in the evening.

    • Because they are destroyed they give birth to more. The only danger is humans not the pigs
      !!!!!!!!!
Instead of murdering them there are humane solutions

  11. Oops. What the experts said is indeed happening. Dilution will not solve the problem, they will return in large numbers.

    • Oops, who in Israel listens to experts who rely on similar attempts that have been made around the world and failed. Here in Israel, everyone knows better and that's how it seems. Ruthless people want to see blood, fire and smoke and that satisfies them even if it doesn't solve the problem. We have long since become a violent society and we see it everywhere.

  12. Once again proves that murder is not the solution, but simply to stop building grandiose projects in natural areas (which have been popping up non-stop in recent years) that leave no room for living and push them into the neighborhoods

It is obvious that the construction of grandiose neighborhoods at the expense of nature is of course unnecessary when there are over 10,000 empty apartments in Haifa

  13. The lack of thinning in the 4 months of the front in the north, and again we see an impossible proliferation of individuals that have grown to the size of cows.
Massive and continuous thinning is required. Non-stop throughout the year.

  14. Indeed, the pigs have been seen for weeks in Wolfson 4 as before, the neighbors reported, unfortunately they were not photographed, I haven't been out much in the last few months, only glimpses from a window towards Keller, mostly smaller ones, I also hear crocodiles howling in the evenings recently, and I saw in the evening on Keller Street, small jackals walking around unimpeded. Through the window to Keller. I did not call, because I did not see the answer from the municipality. Very disappointing. At first I did notify, but I didn't see an improvement.

  15. When will the authorities realize that thinning pigs leads to more breeding. Females mate at an earlier age and there are more litter cycles. But in the municipality nature is ignored.

  16. The photo is of the entrance to the 16-story building at 127 Allenby Road, and the pigs visit regularly and turn over the trash cans with each visit.
In this building there are old people, women, small children, disabled, etc.. Who he/she can guess what is called if a pregnant woman passes by them with 2 or 3 bags of bread and milk and sausage or whatever else..
That woman might be killed by those four pigs.
And then we want to know what the sages of the "Live to Live" movement will tell us!
Maybe they will convince us that the lives of these pigs are more valuable than human life!

Maybe these pigs' lives are more precious than human lives and we don't understand.

  17. Continue thinning quickly before the heat season begins. Address the problem immediately before it becomes a dangerous and scary nuisance again.
