Just thirty minutes of smoking an electronic cigarette leads to a negative effect on cardiac and respiratory indices, and causes an increase in the inflammatory state in the body. This is an expression similar to the effect of smoking regular tobacco products. Data on the short-term effects of electronic cigarette use are now being revealed in a first-of-its-kind study conducted at the Rambam Medical College, and are being published on the occasion of lung cancer awareness month, which is observed every November.
The acute effect of electronic cigarette smoking
As part of the study, which is expected to be published in the coming weeks in ERJ Open research, the researchers wanted to find out how acute the effect of a one-time and short use of an electronic cigarette is on the smokers.
"Our goal was to evaluate the acute effect of smoking an electronic cigarette on cardiac and respiratory parameters, indicators of inflammation and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)," explains Dr. Michal Gor, a senior physician at the Rambam Children's Lung Institute who, together with Dr. Soha Rizik , is one of the team of researchers, "In the research we used a unique device - an 'electronic nose', developed by Prof. Hossam Haik of the Technion, which measures the composition of VOCs. The results of the study emphasize the magnitude of the danger of exposure to this type of product."
30 participants aged 25-30, all healthy, who previously smoked electronic cigarettes took part in the study. The subjects underwent a medical evaluation before and after a half-hour smoking session. These assessments included vital signs, lung functions, blood and sputum inflammation indices and VOCs level.
The research findings showed that after half an hour of smoking, a significant increase in heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure was observed. A decrease in the level of nitrogen monoxide (NO) in the respiratory tract and a change in the composition of VOCs were also measured.
These results led the researchers to the conclusion that, similar to the effect observed in cigarette and hookah smoking, a short exposure to electronic cigarettes is sufficient to lead to negative effects on cardiac and respiratory indices and an increase in the inflammatory state in the body.
"The observed acute effects, together with the known chronic risks, emphasize the importance of effective regulation of electronic cigarettes; vigorous activity to reduce their use, especially among teenagers, is of utmost importance," the Rambam researchers concluded.
So, do you recommend that the youth go back to regular cigarettes? Is that what you are saying?
Regular cigarettes contain about 400 proven substances!!! unequivocally as carcinogens. For some reason this was not mentioned in the article.
Also, for some reason, the fact that those who switched from regular cigarettes to vaping, knows how to report an improvement in breathing and lung capacity was omitted. But no, it is important to say that electronic cigarettes are a negative thing - because they eat into the profits of the tobacco companies.
