The vigilance and quick identification of a Carmel hospital security officer saved the life of a baby within a few days. Liav Haim, deputy director of security at Carmel, recognized the baby from blue at the hospital gate, activated the CPR code, and the pediatric emergency team performed emergency resuscitation on the baby and saved his life. For 22 years now, Liav Chaim has been meeting and seeing the patients who pass through the gates of Carmel Hospital. During his years of work, Liav, who serves as the hospital's deputy security director, has already encountered patients who fainted at the entrance or mothers who were about to give birth at the hospital gate, but he has never had such a case with a baby who almost suffocated and died a few days ago.
"It was another normal morning at our shift in Carmel," says Liav. "Suddenly I perceived from the outside parking lot of the hospital a young mother lifting a small baby in the air, waving him hysterically and shouting everywhere." Liav sensed with his sharp senses that the baby was in dire distress, he immediately ran to the mother and saw the baby changing colors from blue, not breathing and not responding.
Liav immediately hugged and picked up the mother and the baby, lifted them over all the roadblocks and vehicles that were on the way, and flew with them on a shortened and quick route to the children's triage. "While I was running and picking them up with one hand, with the other hand I dialed the special CPR code that alerted the emergency team that arrived in seconds to the emergency room," says Liav. Carmel's skilled CPR team immediately began performing CPR and life-saving operations on the baby. The team that nursed the baby injected him with special drugs and after several long minutes of strenuous teamwork, the color began to return to the baby's body and he came back to life.
Dr. Michal Mold, deputy director of labor in Carmel who was on the resuscitation team, says that the baby suffered from a rare condition of meningitis called enterovirus. Dr. Bassel Ganim, a pediatric specialist in the department who was also with the baby, says that "if the baby had been delayed a few more minutes in the parking lot, we could have lost him, God forbid."
Liav, who was the first to recognize and save the baby, says, "I have a tremendous sense of satisfaction and a special feeling that I saved the life of a small baby. I am a father of small children and who like me knows how stressful it is when your baby stops breathing. I have already had the opportunity to go and help people who have arrived at the hospital several times In all kinds of situations, but this is definitely a special save that made me excited."
Dori Bejarno, the administrative director of the hospital, praised and thanked Liav for his vigilance and successful performance at the special event and said "Liav recognized the baby's distress at the right moment and functioned with admirable efficiency. At the hospital, we have an experienced and skilled professional security team involved in all the hospital's routine and emergency activities. And I am proud of Liav and the entire Carmel team that helped save the baby."
