Saturday morning (12.10.24), Yom Kippur, we went for a trip to the sea. We entered the water to swim to the yellow buoy and maybe on the way we encountered the Italian ship. The only details we knew about its location are that it is about a kilometer and a half from the coast and is embedded in a shallow reef.
The ship ran aground on Rosh Carmel more than a century ago. Its parts are scattered on the bottom, and some remain intact. A monument was placed on the site in memory of the late Haim Ben David, manager of the Val Tal Club, who died during a dive. I was privileged to have him as my dive guide.
A trip to the Italian ship ► Watch
The Italian ship in Haifa
I was curious to see the Italian. We swam towards the yellow buoy and came ashore on it, we met a gray bat who really gave us a tour of the shipwrecks and then we met a beautiful little bull minnow.
An array of abandoned hooks on the seabed
On the way back I recognize a long array of hooks ("Sharak") abandoned on the seabed. They begin to collect, Amir rolls it and I dive to free it from complications on the reef. We collected hundreds of meters of yarn. Irresponsibility to leave it like this with all the turtles walking around here, another reason why the place deserves to be protected as soon as possible, and so it will be.
Meet sea turtles
Later in the swim we met a brown turtle and also a green turtle.
The green turtle was shy and so beautiful, its shell had a special color and texture, I didn't recognize it yet from the turtles known here.
???? The sea turtle community of Rif Bat Galim ????
It was an adventure to find the ship and also to experience a variety of exciting encounters with creatures such as bull mill, gray bat, brown and green turtles.
A drop of escapism from my sea bubble.
May we know quiet days with good news
