About the stages of recognition - portraits of soul and city // Liran Chechik
The solo exhibition presented before you was created uniquely for Step In Gallery.
It seeks to express my personal experiential perception of stairs both in the physical space of the city and in the emotional space of my soul.
Stairs are both a spiritual and physical tool. They are used by us to go up and down between the upper and lower parts of the city. However, in another sense, they are a tool to ascend and descend between these parts of the human soul and its level of consciousness.
Each one of us has his own dark and repressed DOWNTOWN as well as the ACROPOLIS, the upper city on Olympus that everywhere gives permission to strive up and ascend.
A better environment and society starts with a better person. The one who strives to climb the ladder of selection in his upper parts but also recognizes and accepts his lower parts.
The city - as an environment is a product of human actions. Therefore, it is under constant development, like man, the animals and the plants that are found in it.
The images represented in the 7 works describe states of consciousness that make up this development while dealing with the gap between the high and the low that exists within me. The inspiration for these situations was taken from drawings I made while spontaneously wandering around Haifa's urban staircase network.
List of works:
- Growth from the root - the virtues of the prophets - between Hadar and the lower city
- Aspiration to ascend - Maronite Street - the lower city
- Psyche wakes up from the dream - the stairs of the Hadar prophets
- The Generous Tree - Shmuel Stairs - Masada
- Deep in the invisible thicket - fence steps
- Aphrodite is born from the seashell - Rondo of the Loui Promenade and the Baha'im Stairs
- The descent to the god of the body - the steps of the Prophets Hadar
Why is the display there for only 3 days?
Usually a gallery presents an artist for a few months, right?
Congratulations on the initiative to establish a gallery there, but for the Stairs of the Prophets to be a place that creates a buzz around it, you need much more than a gallery, you need some 10-15 different businesses such as restaurants, galleries, workshops, shops...
As started to happen in the Talpiot market. One gallery does not have enough weight, especially when it is small.
In the Tower of the Prophets there is so much wasted empty space, you could make a huge gallery there.
Those who were born in Tifa before the establishment of the state during the time of the British, there were no buses or cars, we used a lot of walking on these stairs. Every corner we met the painting is amazing.
Unbelievable…..
The house in the attached drawing is Ma'lot Hanaviim 21 - a house where I grew up.
The house was owned by the Bargesh family, who was Hassan Shukri's brother-in-law
