"Unfortunate decision, the council should be ashamed" • Alfer is furious over the cancellation of an allocation to an ultra-orthodox school in Haifa

(haipo) - The Haifa City Council approved yesterday (Tuesday, 8/10/24) the recommendation of the Allocations Committee not to continue the allocation to the ultra-Orthodox school "Shaari Torah" in Haifa.

The committee recommended rejecting the request for allocation on the grounds that the school is located on a large area (1,414 square meters) that is not proportional to the number of students studying there. In addition, during the tour conducted by the committee, it became clear that the school has many classrooms that are not used for learning, but are used for storage, while that in other schools in Haifa there is a shortage of space.

The decision to cancel the allocation to the school caused an uproar among the opposition, especially in light of the fact that only in June 2024 (about 4 months ago), the city council canceled the allocation to the ultra-Orthodox school for girls "Alma" by the sea, on the grounds that most of the students at the school are not residents of Haifa. The school submitted a petition to the court and it will be heard in December this year.

Council member Michi Alper from Degel to the Resident Movement, outraged at the decision:
"It is a 1,400 square meter building, which has two schools managed by the independent education association. 350 students study in both schools. In order to pass a recommendation regarding the allocations, two meetings are held. The first time the allocations committee met, it recommended leaving the situation as it is and recommending the allocation based on the opinion of the property division and the city engineer. The second time the committee met, it asked to cancel the allocation. The city engineer, who is a professional, changed his recommendation and claimed that the school has 70 students. Another claim is that there are classes in which 7 students study, which is not true. Based on these data, the allocations committee recommended not to approve the allocation, even though these data are incorrect and the school has 350 students and the school has been operating for 60 years."

Councilor Michi Alper: The decision that was made cannot stand any judicial value

"I think this is an act of revenge"

Alfer also resents the fact that the city council meeting was not broadcast to the public, as was done in other council meetings. "The same council members who demanded to start broadcasting council meetings, now opposed the broadcast. I am shocked that the council members vote and decide without understanding what they are voting on. They do not exercise judgment and make the decision in an immoral way.

I think this is an act of revenge by Mayor Yona Yahav," says Alfer. "There is so much to do in Haifa and this is where they are dealing with such an issue. The decision made cannot be upheld by any court. In the previous term, I managed countless such claims with great success. My personal life is much richer than the decisions made at council meetings."

"Unfortunate decision, there is persecution here"

Alper also protests that the association did not have the opportunity to present the data before the city council as it really is, according to him. "The decision that was made yesterday is an unfortunate decision. The council should be ashamed. There is real persecution here. The independent education invested NIS 640,000 in that school, it is impossible for the municipality to act in this way after such a large investment."

"It's impossible not to think about what happened at the Alma School. Classes there opened as usual on September 1 this year, but on the same day that was supposed to be a holiday, they came to cut off the electricity at the school, but it didn't work. As in the case of the Alma School, so is this time , we will have to go to court."

The decision to cancel the allocation is a fundamental mistake

In response, the independent education stated that the management of the network did not receive a copy of the city council's decision to cancel the allocation. "Even if such a decision was made, the network believes that it is a fundamental mistake. This is a building that houses schools of the "Independent Education" for years and towards this year, about 150 female students were added to the building, when together, about 400 male and female students study in the building. In light of the above, the network's management assumes that the decision, if approved, will be revoked. The independent education will continue to invest in the education of Haifa's children as it has done in the past decades."

  1. Is there no one who knows how to count the number of Haifa students studying at the school???
Why don't the school secretaries have such correct and up-to-date lists?
    what is going on here???
    Everyone here is crazy!!!!!!!!

  2. An entire public that claimed that the establishment of the state was a disaster, does not recognize the declaration of independence and the flag, - still has claims and demands, because this is how the state of Bardak in Nagbirit is conducted....

  3. Since the last elections, it seems that Haifa promotes only secular schools or from the sector.
Even the prayer centers for Kippur, such as Beit Nagler and others, were closed this year with one excuse or another, they probably wouldn't have come if it was the Pride Parade or the New Year's Eve celebrations.

It feels as if Haifa prefers the importation of Arab residents from the Galilee, Shebaim and drug addicts, and to keep the observant away.

  4. No commenter knows who studies there.
The population there is not ultra-Orthodox, the school belongs to the independent education system and the students are really not ultra-Orthodox.

  5. a scandal
This school is perhaps the last point in this area, which until 35-30 years ago was one of the best Jewish and communal neighborhoods in the city.
We are losing more and more educational hold in the neighborhoods of the city and Jewish parents are forced to move to the companion cities to find another educational solution and in these processes, in my opinion, Haifa is deteriorating to become more and more mixed and the majority is slowly becoming a minority in the city.
Instead of the municipality giving an incentive to ultra-Orthodox/new immigrants to stay and live in the city, do they close the schools because of a mistake in data collection?
And all this to the applause of some of the commenters here?
    sad.

    • This school is near Shaar Aliya and Neveh David. What is your problem with the demographics of these neighborhoods?
The description of the neighborhoods sounds completely disconnected from reality and it is quite likely that you do not know them at all.
Why do Haredim need an incentive?
Are they a privileged population that must always be incentivized and financed just for their existence?

Mr. Alfer campaigned against state education when Klish gave him a free hand. Engaged in raking public buildings for his own benefit and also expressed from his position as deputy mayor a lack of care and responsibility towards anyone who is not from his specific camp.
The wheel turned and howl not now that his heart was rough and alienated to all the members who were badly knocked during his term of office.
The cry of the robbed Cossack is classic.

He is encouraged to look for another city in which to carry out his plot. Haifa is not the address for that.

    • Error in receiving data????
      Prepare correct data!!!!!!
      don't know how to count????
      Maybe start teaching core classes….

    • Mrs. Gila Filled with your apparently innate dislike for religion and religious people, I realized that you are not Haifa at all. Before writing a comment, you should also check the geography of Haifa where exactly the Shaarei Torah school is located in the city.

  6. All ultra-Orthodox "education" should not receive a shekel. Straits people who do not contribute anything to the state's economy, so they will not receive from the state's economy either

    • Excellent decision. Can someone tell us what the ultra-Orthodox contribute to the state? I wish there were more righteous decisions like this. Well done!! The ultra-Orthodox, in most of their brazenness, want to eat the cake and leave it whole. Enough with this blackmail. Are there core studies among these schools? Or are there "studies" like that??? There will be no more religion. Those who want religion - not at the expense of the secular.

  7. Dear Mr. Michy Alper,
During the tenure of the previous mayor, Mrs. Kalish, and you as the chairman of the planning and construction committee, you dealt as you were supposed to. Up until now, everything has changed, and accordingly also the priorities for all the other residents of Haifa.
Enough with the religion, enough to squeeze the municipality's resources. Relax and let us run a city properly.

  8. The municipality must take care of ultra-Orthodox students from Haifa. They are 70 students who will find Marom who will also teach children and close it to yeshiva students. Don't discriminate, you will be ashamed of everything we go through just because of the behavior of Jews against them, including that we pay what they deserve for everyone's rights. Shame on you!
