(Hai Fe) - Over 80 deaths in traffic accidents involving buses and trucks in 2023, 62 traffic accidents occurred in Haifa.
The Green Light Association told Hai Fa News Corporation:
On Thursday, September 5, 2024, a 17-year-old boy was killed in a car accident between a private vehicle and a bus on Route 367 between Kfar Etzion and Givat in Gush Etzion. A few days before, on August 18, Aviva Tagiyeh, a 43-year-old resident of Ma'ale Adumim, was killed by a truck on Highway 6, near the Nachshonim interchange. Four of her children were slightly injured in the accident.
81 fatal traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons (buses and trucks) occurred during the year 2023, according to data from the Or Yerok association based on the CBS data. A fatal traffic accident is an accident in which at least one person is killed (there are accidents with several fatalities but it is still one fatal accident).
The data also shows that 1,138 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred in 2023, with 392 of them being serious accidents (the highest figure in the last decade). Analysis of the data of the last decade (2023-2014) reveals that 12,965 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred in Israel, 887 of which were fatal accidents. This means that at least 887 people lost their lives in those traffic accidents.
Attorney Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of the Green Or Association:
About a hundred people are killed every year on average in accidents with heavy vehicles. The heavy mass combined with the driving speed increases the risk of an accident and worsens its results. The heavy vehicle sector in Israel has been neglected in recent years and suffers from a great shortage of drivers. Many trucks and buses travel with safety defects and the drivers work long hours under great fatigue and sometimes far beyond what is allowed by law. The Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety has been dragging its feet for many years and does not approve the introduction of the digital tachograph - that simple device that will prevent driving beyond the hours allowed by law as well as traveling at high speed. The digital tachograph has long been integrated in many advanced countries in the world and Israel lags behind and only allows the use of an outdated analog device. The time has come to close the gap with European countries, approve the use of the digital tachograph and save human lives.
62 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred in Haifa
663 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred in cities and towns during the year 2023, of which 33 traffic accidents were lethal (at least one fatality) And 236 accidents were serious.
- 62 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles (trucks and buses) occurred in Haifa during the year 2023, three of them fatal (at least one fatality in each accident) and 21 serious accidents. 520 traffic accidents involving a heavy vehicle occurred during the last decade (2023-2014) in the city, 31 of which were fatal accidents in which at least one person was killed and 127 serious traffic accidents.
Accidents involving trucks
The number of serious (fatal and serious) accidents involving trucks or buses is high compared to other types of vehicles. The greater mass of these vehicles causes more serious consequences during an accident. Moreover, buses move in an environment with a high concentration of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, and this increases their involvement in serious accidents.
In relation to driving, the fatality rates in accidents involving a heavy truck (over 12 tons) are four times higher than the fatality rates involving a private vehicle, and several times the fatality rates involving a light truck (up to 12 tons). In relation to traveling, the rate of fatalities in accidents involving a bus is six times higher, and the rate of serious injuries is five times higher compared to a private car.
Most serious and fatal accidents involving buses occur on urban roads, while most serious and fatal accidents involving trucks occur on interstate roads.
