(haipo) - The underground passage in the Kiryat Eliezer neighborhood, which has been badly neglected over the years, is about to get a new life. At a celebratory community event, the transition will receive a refreshing "facelift", using spectacular wall paintings that will decorate it in happy and optimistic colors.
The underground passage connecting the Kiryat Eliezer and Bat Galim neighborhoods in Haifa is well known to the residents, due to its long years of neglect. We have written about the difficult situation of the crossing, which has been closed at times over the years, many times in Haifa, mainly in light of repeated complaints from residents who used to use it and found it difficult to come to terms with its ongoing misery.
long years of misery
The tunnel (or passage, whatever you choose) is about to undergo a change that will change its face completely. The many complaints from the residents of the area are about to receive the long-awaited answer very soon.
A joint community initiative of the Department of Social Services-West, the Community Security Authority and the Municipality of Haifa, will redesign the old tunnel, using spectacular wall paintings that will give it a colorful and happy appearance - a new and enlightening outfit for the New Year.
when? On Sunday, 22/9/24, at 16:00-20:00 p.m
The festive community happening will be held on Sunday 22/9/24 when the residents of the neighborhood and its surroundings will gather there and take an active part in painting the walls in the underground passage.
The event, which will take place between 16:30 and 20:00, will allow residents to paint on the walls in cheerful and happy colors, with Adi Yonatan Cohen, a Haifa graffiti artist and rapper who specializes in community murals, being in charge of the job. Cohen, who is also known for his moving portrait of Rachel Edri from Ofekim, will lead the participants in the event towards a joint creation that aims not only to beautify the transition, but also to strengthen the ties in the community.
At 17:00, as part of the event, there will be a symbolic ceremony of blowing the shofar by Rabbi Yossi Lipash of the Kiryat Eliezer Chabad House, which will herald the beginning of the new year and the hope for positive changes in the neighborhood.
A sense of security and art in the public space
Yael Shanar, a member of the city council and a resident of the neighborhood, told Lahi Pa:
"This is a welcome initiative that came just in time. The underground passage connects Kiryat Eliezer and Bat Galim and turns them into one geographical unit, which makes it easier for residents to move between the neighborhoods for daily needs, such as shopping at the shopping center in Kiryat Eliezer or receiving medical services at the Linn Medical Center, as well as social gatherings In the cafes or on the beaches in Bat Galim.
Now it is also necessary to improve the issue of accessibility in the transition, since the existing staircase makes it difficult for parents with strollers and people with disabilities. I acted in promoting the issue when I was in the opposition and now I will act from the coalition in order to promote the issue in front of the Ministry of Transportation. I thank the mayor and the director general of the municipality for the important project, because a well-kept and aesthetic crossing increases the sense of security and encourages wider use, which may also reduce vandalism."
A member of the city council, Kirill Kartnik, expressed his support for the project and noted the importance of bringing art into the public space: "Murals are a great way to introduce art and turn gray places into something positive and attractive. This contributes to the feeling of security and also gives a platform to local artists."
The colorful project, designed to bring life to the neglected crossing, creates an exciting and special opportunity for the residents of Kiryat Eliezer and Bat Galim to take part in the community creation that will improve the appearance of the neighborhood, connect the residents and have a positive effect on the sense of security and optimism in the entire environment.
How much time and factors had to take credit and "planning", to pour bleach there and clean up garbage... and finally allow the residents to paint the place...
Shame on Erit Haifa.
shame
And once again, the citizens do the work instead of the government. And two more parasites hitch a ride on it. The local negligent pigeon is busy emptying trash cans that don't look good to him when he travels. And one more thing, does someone supervise all the 38 matches that fill the Carmel? It doesn't look so good.
There is no doubt that there is a need for in-depth and comprehensive thinking about the city, I am an architect and I have been involved in planning and building cities abroad. Until the time comes when they will manage the city in terms of planning, the underground passage is indeed neglected, it does not feel safe and I would suggest, since it exists, until they decide how to deal with it, pubs and food trucks can be opened inside the underground until the wee hours of the night. It is a place protected from rain and wind, and if they know how to plan it properly it can be a place that is both a transition and a place for recreation. See the passage on the ground floor of Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv.
Beauty at least color, if not substantial plans like the train tunnel under Bat Galim to the bay that would at least have graffiti paintings
It's time to reduce the traffic lights using road pavement and underground crossings. Passages that go down or a road that goes down 3 stories down, saving an overcrowded intersection at the top, you can plant trees and put in cafes
The oldest underground passage in Haifa is the passage under Balfour Street at the Herzl-Balfour-Bialik intersection.
A mural solves the smells of urine, dirt, the lack of cleanliness and the lack of feeling of security in the passage?!
I would love to understand how?!
I also ask myself... what a dream. They talk about a particular sewage problem that arises in the winter, the stench of animal excrement, cracked floors... and then suggest painting on the wall. what's the connection????
Instead of applying paint, do a proper renovation. Make a new ceiling covering, not painting, this is not a house for rent. Replace lighting flooring, change the entrances to the tunnel that will be on a European level.
You will install cameras at the entrance and along the tunnel that will be connected to the overhead monitoring to prevent vandalism and crime.
Put this space in for regular cleaning maintenance.

Who is the writer? I choose you for mayor! Great plans! Come out of the shadows and build an alternative team to the recycled and tired mayor.
The answer is money money
And what about the cleaning of that part of the crossing, which is the responsibility of the municipality?
Murals, with the smell of urine, spilled coffee, and poop... (probably not only of dogs and cats...) won't really make a facelift for the transition...
Add to that flooding in the rain and problematic lighting, and we get a place that is very essential for many people, but somewhat problematic...
And more... I have seen several times that people (some of them are sick or use a pacemaker) have actually been stopped by train security guards and required to produce and reveal medical certificates, or otherwise pass through a metal detector... (one of the cases, just to understand the situation, the person had a pacemaker Lev....) Why not make a separation between the general transition and the transition to the train?
Peace
I have an offer
You can set up 2 small businesses there and it will protect the place
Thanks
Do not write that the tunnel is neglected. For those who invested several times in the renovation and the murals that were painted in fed up
So you found someone who doesn't know the history of the tunnel because maybe he wasn't born when it was built
It's beautiful to paint but….. the tunnel since it was built has undergone a lot of excellent murals in which a lot of money and no less talent have been invested.
The problem is that not enough has been invested in the education of the youth of the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I see the walls in a few years and hope they will remain as they will be at the end of the project.
There are water leaks under the flooring. Why paint when it will be destroyed anyway when the water rises up in a rapillary manner?
Let's hope that there will be good lighting and music in the transition will also help the feeling of pleasantness and security
Good time and good luck. The underground passage
will be nurtured and parted from his consummation.
At the same time, in my opinion, to network with cameras
All the signs include moving towards the street.
The cameras will be connected to a municipal center
When needed, the call center will call you
security forces.
The underground tunnel, which is dangerous for those passing through it during the hours of darkness, should and must be replaced, and acts of rape and robbery have already taken place in it, and the place has become a hotbed for drug addicts.
and change to an overhead bridge that will connect the two neighborhoods
Why really use the mind? When can we do another happening? It is better to invest in this than in a proper transition
And what about the crossing on Kabari Street in Kiryat Haim?
Arie, have you heard of Haifa's backyard? From Check Post to Kiryat Shmuel Kiryat Haim will be free from this village called Haifa
