(haipo) - An administrative petition was submitted this week to the court in Haifa against the municipality, the Nature and Parks Authority and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, demanding that the shooting of wild boars in the city be stopped. The petition was submitted 4 months after the Let Live Association withdrew the previous petition and stopped the procedure that had begun with the Haifa Municipality.
The petition was submitted by attorney Avital Ben Nun and Karin Arad, two residents of Haifa who are active for animal rights. The petitioners' attorney, attorney Richard Saleh, said: "The shooting is carried out in violation of the provisions of the law and endangers the lives of residents and protected wildlife ".
The petitioners: "Shooting near houses - a danger to citizens and the environment"
According to the petition, the shooting of pigs is carried out within a range of less than 500 m from public buildings and residences, which is contrary to the provisions of the law on the protection of wild animals. In addition to this, the operations are carried out at night, using external contractors, which raises the fear of dangerous shooting that could endanger human life.
"The municipality ignores the law and uses the permits it was given to shoot near houses and public parks," the petitioners claim. The petition also claims that the Nature and Parks Authority (RTG) grants the municipality exceptional permits to harm pigs, in violation of the law protecting wild animals and despite the express prohibition of shooting in populated areas.
Fear of wild boar attacks - truth or excuse?
For its part, the municipality claims that it is necessary to act to reduce the wild boar population, due to the danger they pose to public health, including the fear of disease transmission and attacks on residents. On the other hand, the petitioners claim that the shooting is unjustified and that it is the real danger to human life, due to the fact that it is carried out without adequate safety measures and in a manner that is not properly controlled.
"The shooting must be stopped immediately and peace and safety restored to the residents of Haifa," emphasizes Attorney Saleh.
The petition asks the court to issue an order prohibiting the municipality from shooting wild boars and ordering the Nature and Parks Authority to stop issuing special permits.
The petitioners, Ben Nun and Arad, said:
"We submitted to the Haifa District Court an administrative petition against the Haifa Municipality, the Nature and Parks Authority, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Coastal District Police. In our opinion, this is a precedent-setting petition with significant nationwide implications. The petition was filed on our behalf by attorney Richard Saleh.
The subject of the petition is shooting carried out by the Haifa municipality inside the city, in violation of the law and in a manner that endangers human life, with the backing of the Nature and Parks Authority, which issues hunting permits that are against the law, and with the silent backing of the Hoof District Police, which refrains from enforcing the law.
The petitioners also added: "As is well known and publicized, for several months now the municipality of Haifa has been slaughtering wild pigs in the city, in the name of fulfilling Yona Yahav's election promise. As of July 2024, the municipality has killed over 400 wild pigs. Pigs are killed by firing firearms, at the entrance of residents' homes, Near residents who are on the street, from a car, without checking the area at all and risking human life.
The importance of the petition, among other things, stems from the fact that the Nature and Parks Authority is operating illegally not only in Haifa. After the attempts to motivate the authorities to act according to the law were exhausted, the petition was submitted."

But never since my days have so many wild boars walked so freely and without fear near me. They are not afraid of people, they continue to stand and eat what is available, turn over bins (now less because the bins are reinforced with an iron chain) and destroy gardens and this is definitely a nuisance and diseases. Their urine smell is pungent, lots of feces everywhere which can spread diseases.
I don't have a solution, but I believe in Yona Yahav that he will do everything to help us, the residents, without abusing the pigs, but kill them with as little suffering as possible, or that they will find a better solution on my part, according to the understanding of the professionals.
