(haipo) - Residents report a continuous lighting problem on Haifa's beach promenade, which made walking there in the evening scary and unsafe. A large part of the lighting fixtures on the bicycle path on the Hecht Promenade do not work at all, while the section on the Shekmona Promenade, near the Sea and Lakes Research Institute, is entirely in complete darkness.
The Hai Pa system, as mentioned, received many complaints from residents who used to walk regularly in the area in the evening, and now they avoid doing so due to the fault in the lighting system, which made walking on the boardwalk an unpleasant and even dangerous experience.
Racheli Orbach, a resident of Haifa (and a reporter for Hai Fe) describes the feelings: "Walking on the boardwalk has become scary. There is a need for night lighting both physically and emotionally. The feeling is that we are walking in complete darkness and don't know what might happen at any moment. It just feels very unsafe ".
Other residents point out that they have already contacted the municipality several times, requesting that the lighting be fixed and that security be sent to the area, but so far the issue has not been addressed. Many want to emphasize that the safety aspect is critical for them, and now, due to the lack of lighting, they completely avoid taking their regular walks on the boardwalk some time before dark.
Studies show that dark areas are a target for crime and delinquency and, on the other hand, adequate lighting keeps potential dangers away. The residents of Haifa are calling on the municipality to quickly intervene and fix the lighting defects on the beach promenade and other places in the city, in order to ensure the safety of the residents and the pleasant feeling of spending time around the city.
The Haifa municipality refused to comment.
