(Live here in the Dead Sea) - Israel, located on the Syrian-African rift, is considered an area of particularly active tectonic activity, which leads to spectacular but also dangerous geological phenomena. One of the prominent areas for observing this activity is the Dead Sea area, where you can see the dramatic effects of geological processes. In particular, the Dead Sea sinkhole area offers a spectacular but dangerous tour, whose appearance may be deceiving.

sinkholes and geological activity

Sinkholes are a geological phenomenon that results from the dissolution of salt layers by fresh water, a process that leads to the drying out of large areas and the creation of large holes in the ground. In the Dead Sea region, this phenomenon intensifies following the drop in the water level and the pumping of water for industrial needs. The area where the sinkholes occur often resembles the surface of the moon - huge wadis, sinkhole hills and dangerous passages.

What the mirror does not reveal

From a distance, the area may look like a wild and beautiful landscape, but getting closer to the area reveals the dark sides of the area. Many sinkholes, some of them huge and terrifying, destroy the infrastructure in the area and threaten buildings such as the Mineral resort and the Ein Gedi hot springs. This process not only endangers the buildings but also poses a danger to people who enter the place without proper knowledge or preparation.

The impact of human activity

The pumping of Dead Sea water for industrial needs, the high evaporation of the water, and the lack of significant precipitation in the area, all contribute to the increase of the phenomenon. The drop in the water level exposed the upper layers of the salt, which leads to the rapid dissolution of the material and the creation of the sinkholes. The result is areas that appear distorted and unstable, which may form and sometimes collapse quickly.

The means of observation and caution

Today, the area is regularly monitored by the seismological institute and the cameras installed there. Observing the sinkholes allows you to know where the dangers are greatest, but you must also be careful when observing from the road. The depth of some of the sinkholes reaches more than 15 meters, and access to them is very dangerous. In the field, warning signs indicate the dangers and it is important to avoid approaching the marked areas.

In conclusion:

The dark side of the Syrian-African divide in Israel, as brought about by the phenomenon of sinkholes in the Dead Sea region, offers spectacular but dangerous experiences. The impact of human and physical activity on the area creates great risks that are not always visible at first glance. It is important to be aware of the dangers and take precautions when visiting these areas.

  4. Hi Muti
Beautiful pictures but the last picture is amazing
Regarding the sinkholes, for years the country continues to allow over-pumping of the Dead Sea water for money! for a private company.
Too bad! that for years the state continues to underestimate the treasures. its nature.

    • Hello Shay
There are restrictions but a bit late.
A case owner, a few years with lots of floods will balance his situation
