"It's contempt, insensitivity and disconnection" • Students in Haifa claim a lack of consideration on the part of the university

(haipo) - Students studying for a bachelor's degree at the University of Haifa are required to take a number of courses in English according to their level (in addition to the degree studies), as a condition for completing their obligations in studies. According to students, the English courses place many demands on them during only a few weeks, and this without any consideration of the complex security situation that prevails in the country.

"We are a group of students, both from the basic level and from the advanced level," says a student studying in the second year of his first degree. "We turned to the English department and asked them to consider us and make the assignments in the English courses easier for us. We are now in the third semester in a row, it is a short semester, and we found ourselves required in a period of only one month, to be tested twice and also to present a presentation in front of the class. The thing that surprised us the most, is that the first assignment, which is a test on vocabulary, which was always conducted on the computer without coming to class, is different now to the test that is carried out in the classroom. We do not understand why make it even more difficult for us at a time like this, when there are students who are afraid to go to university because of the tense situation in the country. It is very difficult for us to do in a few weeks A final exam, a mid-term exam, and also a presentation. Of course, the English courses are in addition to the requirements for our degree. In one month, we have to be ready for all these exams, regardless of how many And how much, when the country is at war."

University policy

"Along with us in the English studies at all levels there are policemen and soldiers, permanent fighters and reserve fighters, who are in intensive activity all day long and still there is no consideration. The security situation is very critical and we are stressed. A policeman is studying with me, part of his team was injured on the seventh of October, the day the war broke out. I have fighters and paramedics with me, people who are thrown into all kinds of activities, and still require them to meet all the requirements. We contacted the English unit, explained our difficulties and received letters of reply, that they are acting according to the university's policy and do not intend to change the conduct."

Students during the first degree are required to learn English according to their English level. If their level of English is high, they are exempt from learning English. Others have the option of studying English in a period of between 4 and XNUMX semesters. The student's English level can be determined according to the psychometric test or through the Amiram test - a uniform tool used by all academic institutions in determining the English level of applicants for the first degree. Since there are students who are admitted to the university without a psychometric test, the Amiram test is significant for them.

"We were offered to cancel the course"

"You also have to remember that each English course costs several thousand shekels. The whole thing is a very frustrating and unpleasant experience, especially in today's situation. We sent a letter to the English unit and the answer was that they do not intend to change their minds. Some of us are drafted into the army and there is still no consideration. Some of us With families. Our degree depends on these courses. We have been studying for three semesters without a break. All we are asking is to get some relief They were told that until 15/8/24 they can cancel the course and get a refund, it's a disgrace, insensitivity and disconnection from reality. The work is in the field, with a very high daily risk. We are not asking for a degree certificate as a gift, but an understanding of reality and consideration."

"Committed to the standards - that the students do not find themselves with a second class degree"

The university administration claims that everything possible is being done to make it easier for the students and to take them into account in light of the situation: "In light of the security situation, and throughout the past year, the University of Haifa has invested many resources to help all students meet all academic requirements, including financial and academic aid, and especially for students from The reserve servants, the members of the security and rescue forces and the victims of the war - for them a unique relief outline was set, which included special examination dates, reinforcement classes and more.
We do not know any students from among the reservists or members of the security forces who required these concessions and did not receive them. The University of Haifa is obliged to its students to meet the high academic standards, so that they do not find themselves with a "second class degree" - which will harm them in the employment market.

Specifically regarding English studies - this year many activities and changes were made to allow all students to meet all the requirements, with maximum consideration and flexibility, and to see - 97% of all students successfully passed the various levels this year. In light of the impressive percentage of success, claims about lack of consideration or piling up difficulties sound far from reality. The significant change was the transfer of part of the studies to an online format, which made it possible not only to study independently from home, but also to repeat the tasks and tests, until the unit is completed and a maximum grade is reached. Beyond that, the English studies unit operated a support and accompaniment system for all students, which included academic assistance and reinforcement classes delivered by the unit's own instructors.

Special emphasis is given to students who were recruited into the reserves, evacuees and students whose sons or spouses were recruited into the reserves or who are members of the security forces. These students were given the option of Zoom courses, which were scheduled ad hoc according to their personal schedules, which allowed them to learn from the field as well. In addition, they were entitled to group, couple or individual reinforcement classes, starting from 07:00 in the morning until 19:00 in the evening and the grade The final of each and every one of them took into account the length of time they studied, the units they managed to do and more - and everything is adjusted personally to the individual case of each and every one.

We are proud that all reserve servants or their spouses and evacuees passed the courses successfully!
The University of Haifa in general and the unit for English studies in particular will continue to be available to the students and do as much as possible so that everyone can meet the academic requirements."

  1. crying for her name. The university students think they have arrived at college. If it's not good for them, let them lower the level and study at a college that doesn't demand too much from them.

  2. Is it not possible to stretch the studies for more years? This is what students did in the case. the corona virus
And in light of the comments written here, a new idea:
Maybe you will be scared and the pensioners of the ultra-Orthodox community have already created for you a special track for Torah students....a doctor's certificate in a shortened track, etc., etc.
Israel is on its way to becoming a third world...

  3. I don't understand, do you want the diploma for free?
It is not convenient for you to learn English in a short summer semester, so postpone it until the next semester, which has more time
No one will hold your hand throughout the degree, you have to take care of yourself

  4. "Along with us in the English studies at all levels, there are police officers and soldiers, permanent fighters and reserve fighters, who are in intensive activity all day long and still there is no consideration."

That is, those who wrote it do not serve in the security forces. They only study with people in the security forces!
And not for nothing, because those who really serve in the army, the police, etc., those who really do something, those who are really affected by the war, do not complain. They get all the benefits and concessions they really need. The ones who make noise are those spoiled students in every class, who don't want Doing nothing in the routine and riding on the current situation without shame, on the backs of Israel's heroes!

  5. Why should you study? Look at Knesset members in Likud, they didn't study and earn 40 thousand, be uneducated bibists, get ahead in life

    • I studied a bachelor's degree in a semi-electronic program. I went through a crisis
and help me I just spread the title out for more time than my friends.
I am in favor of providing assistance and support
to the security forces or people
      who get into stressful situations.
      Successfully

  6. Bir Zeit University.
    Shame and more shame.
Funding academic staff who support Hamas and hate the state.
Disgusting to study there. Bad atmosphere, pollution in politics and extremist cells

  7. Arabs have affirmative action
    Jews have discrimination
An unnecessary institution that is unclear as to why it receives a budget from the state when it works against it.

  8. Is this the university's fault? Why do other universities have special concessions?

You need to contact the Authority for Advanced Studies, for example, on the subject.

  9. Not surprising at all
Those who allow demonstrations against the state within the Mossad will not be surprised by everything else.
This is exactly why I chose to study elsewhere this year.

  10. It's very simple, guys, stop studying, you're not learning anything, only models and theories that are not related to the real world. You will finish your studies and become unemployed, in the end you will finish with a certificate course in complementary medicine and that will accelerate, this is what happens to those who study in the academy. These useless, money-grubbing, treacherous left-wing institutions should be abolished. In the end it ended in Colombia. You have time to cancel your studies. It's not too late

  11. The University of Haifa just needs to dry up, I'm a first year student and like many others I was also called to the reserves, first semester they really came to meet us and helped but the last semester feels like they're telling us good luck to complete everything and if you don't succeed then try next year, no matter how much we appealed to the staff Please make adjustments for students who were not even one week in a row during the semester but we were still left with an answer that it depends on various factors and they have nothing to do about it.
I'm considering doing a transfer to another university, really disrespecting students who do reservists is already very excessive. I hope that maybe someone who reads this will start to do something.

    • I also studied at the University of Haifa and I remember whole sectors that, even in the days when they were reformed, received huge discounts on the degree requirements, discounts that they obtained from their workplaces and strong organizations they belonged to such as the teachers' union, or the army or the police. People who came to "get a degree" because it added money to their salary. It was from a "blink of an eye" arrangement with special and shortened routes. People didn't leave more educated at an academic level (how many educated police officers do you know?), but that wasn't the goal. It is clear that today there are many students who make reserves and they need to be taken into account, but I have the feeling that those who complain are precisely those who "caught a ride" on the academy through agreements with their workplaces and are now checking what else they can get without studying too much. Zillat of the academic degree.

  12. At the end of the degree, they will be able to return to work in falafel with advanced English because a degree and toilet paper are about the same.

  13. For decades the University of Haifa has been known as Bir Zeit. A deep plowing must be done to neutralize the proxies of the enemies of the state

  14. I read the student's article, he wrote from his heart, I'm sure it wasn't easy for him, and he "represents" many of his friends. in my opinion. Such high studies are supposed to be good for the students, they chose to succeed at the university, as fate would have it, our lives changed from one end to the other, and most of the young people were drafted into the army, and experienced very difficult things there. It is hard to understand that now there is not enough consideration for them, my heart hurts.

  15. Finish a degree without knowing English at a minimum academic level? It's like letting a surgeon operate on a patient only partially. Today's students are spoiled. Maybe they want someone to infuse them with English knowledge? Their audacity knows no bounds. Don't want English? Don't study at all!

    • Really not a fair comparison!!!
English is not so required at a critical level and we as students are really not spoiled.
We have just finished a particularly demanding summary work of the first semester, even though the semester already ended in July.
It wouldn't hurt at all if September was meant for gaining renewed strength without the multitasking of English.

  16. I am also doing a bachelor's degree at the university.
I can testify that it is not only in English.
No consideration at all!! In every track!! In all professions!!
