S., 30 years old from Tbilisi, Georgia, became the first person to have her hip bones straightened and lengthened using a magnetic nail, in one of the countries of the former USSR.
The method, which is considered innovative and replaces external technology that was used until now, is common in Israel and other Western countries, but its use has not yet been made in the Eastern European countries that formerly belonged to the Soviet regime.
According to Prof. Mark Idelman, director of the Pediatric Orthopedics Unit at Rambam, and who performed the surgery, along with Dr. Doron Keshet, a senior physician in the unit - due to the prevalence of the problem in these countries, this is great news for a significant population: "The procedure itself is considered a revolution in the field Orthopedic surgery," Prof. Idelman clarifies, "in the countries of the former USSR, there are many who suffer from syndromes that cause short stature and limb deformities, as well as other groups who need the same medical assistance, due to other factors. The operation performed in Georgia is the first step in high-quality and advanced treatment for these people."
The innovative limb lengthening treatment is done using a magnetic nail implanted in the bones of the relevant limb. The lengthening itself is done by stretching the nail, in stages, with the help of an external magnet, which allows easy control and manipulation without pain or difficulty for the patient. In the past, the procedure was performed using an external device, which was attached to the bones, and caused damage to the tissues and in some cases also to the skeleton, limitations of movement, severe pain and exposure to infections.
"Our patient was operated on in the past in an attempt to correct the deformity with which she was born - shortening of the hip," explains Prof. Idelman, "the surgical ability is limited, and even after the surgical procedures she underwent, there is still a gap between the lengths of the legs of 45 millimeters. After the magnet implantation, the lengthening process The gap is over, the gap has shrunk significantly and for her it's only 5 millimeters, it's a world of difference."
