(haipo) - The city council unanimously approved last Tuesday (6/8/24), the municipality's joining the initiative of the cluster of local authorities in the Gulf, to establish a new construction waste site worth NIS 3.4 million.
The CEO of the municipality, Gadi Margalit: "For years we have struggled with the issue of handling construction waste, we believe that establishing such a system has many advantages."
Construction waste thrown into the public domain constitutes a serious environmental hazard and causes significant financial expenses, due to the need to collect it and transfer it to authorized sites. In view of the problem that has gotten worse and worse in recent years, the Municipality of Haifa is a member of the Gulf Authorities Cluster, with the aim of creating a comprehensive and strategic plan to deal with the issue.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection published a call for support for regional structures for the treatment and recycling of construction waste, within which a budget of NIS 50 million will be allocated for the project.
So far, the cluster of Gulf authorities has received support in the amount of 6 million shekels for two associations, and with the support of the association in Usafia, another 3.4 million shekels will be added to this amount, after the decision was made unanimously in the Haifa City Council.
In addition, the cluster of authorities received from the Israel Lands Authority rights to operate the Jalma site, which will serve as one of the main centers for the treatment of construction waste for Haifa and Usafia, a step that marks the beginning of the road to improving waste management, reducing environmental damage and reducing municipal expenses.
The CEO of Haifa Municipality, Gadi Margalit, said:
"This is great news. For years we have struggled with the issue of handling construction waste. We believe that the establishment of such an arrangement brings additional benefits of reducing costs for handling construction waste. This is the first agreement between us and the cluster of Gulf authorities and I hope there will be many more. It will give a salve to the issue of construction waste."
The chairman of the Hadash faction, Raja Zaatara, told Lahi Pa:
"For several years now, we have been receiving inquiries, both from residents and contractors, regarding the lack of construction waste sites. There has been a phenomenon of dumping waste in neighborhoods and public space, and even in nature and wadis. According to the council's decision, the municipality will receive NIS 3.4 million from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and there is already approved land for the site, which will be Shared by the Haifa Municipality and the Asafia Local Council.
This is important and welcome because it optimizes economically as well as environmentally, since it is waste treatment and not landfilling. According to estimates, the site will be built in about six months."
Hello, in the photos in the article the sculpture "Untitled 3 - Stack" [top] and "Polyram Serpent" [bottom] is photographed
of the well-known Haifa sculptor Z. Bel-Agranov. The sculptor works in several courtyards of buildings in Haifa.
This is a groundbreaking work, which was intentionally placed exactly as it was placed, without unnecessary questions.
Please do not touch, do not move and God forbid collect it in the bins (severe damage to the artist's intention).
