(haipo) - Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile fever virus were detected in the port of Haifa, according to a notification received by the port and the municipality of Haifa from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
In the announcement of the Ministry of Environmental Protection received at the port of Haifa and the municipality, it was stated that according to the report of the laboratory for viruses at the Ministry of Health dated 24/7/24, mosquitoes sampled at the port of Haifa were identified as infected with the West Nile fever virus.
The sampling was carried out by the sampling team of the Ministry of Environmental Protection in the Haifa district, as part of the ministry's supervision activities, with the aim of preventing the spread of West Nile fever.
According to the document, the Port of Haifa is required to carry out several actions to prevent the spread of the virus:
- The port must notify the workers in its field and the residents living in the area of the authority adjacent to the port area and within a 5 km radius of the affected area, to protect themselves from mosquito bites by installing nets, and using mosquito repellents approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health.
- To carry out spatial monitoring and locating potential centers for mosquito breeding within a 5 km radius of the mentioned center and its surroundings.
- Make sure to carry out extermination against mosquito larvae in places where mosquito breeding sites have been located, with materials approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection for the extermination of mosquito larvae with a valid registration.
The Port of Haifa responded: "The Ministry of Environmental Protection's request was received and we are acting in accordance with its instructions."
The Haifa Municipality responded:
Following the announcement by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, about the discovery of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus, the municipality is increasing its activity in an effort to prevent the outbreak of the disease.
Following the announcement by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the municipality appealed to the port management demanding immediate action to implement the Ministry of Environmental Protection's directives. In the meantime, the municipality continues its activity to locate and dry stagnant water points, which may be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Also, the municipality, according to the Ministry's instructions, carries out extermination in stagnant bodies of water where the mosquitoes carrying the virus were discovered, in full coordination and according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection's instructions.
In addition to all these, the municipality appeals to the residents to check and dry standing water lines in the houses, in the yards of the houses and on the roofs. Locate and remove (or dry) objects in which water has accumulated such as barrels, cans, old tires, leaky faucets, flowerpot bases, repair leaks from water pipes and air conditioners. Avoid overwatering the garden, as too high humidity attracts mosquitoes. Any source of water that cannot be drained must be covered and sealed well, including the home sewage system.
In addition, the municipality recommends that residents, especially those living near the port, use mosquito repellents recommended by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. It is also recommended to take care and keep windows protected by nets.
What are the signs of infection with Nile fever?
I don't understand what this stubbornness is and not to spray as usual in every city, spray against mosquitoes properly once and this is only a spray that helps, there is nothing else
I would like to report a puddle of sewage at the entrance to Bat Galim under the bridge for years and the Haifa Municipality is unable despite many requests under the bridge of the train at the entrance towards Bat Galim Rambam
You have to be careful in Haifa because we have no awareness of the danger of Nile fever!
What does Haifa municipality mean? Urgent treatment should be done in all the neighborhoods with the help of smoke like they used to do in the past.
