(haipo) - Many residents, who live in different places in Haifa, have recently reported the appearance of aphids - tiny insects that settle on plants and trees and cause damage to them.
When a tree that is in public space is damaged by aphids, its treatment is the responsibility of the municipality, but when it is a tree that is on private property, the occupants of the house or building are responsible for treating the hazard. The main problem is, of course, the damage to the tree itself or its vegetation.
The aphids can move from plant to plant, spread over large areas and damage gardens, various plants and pots on balconies.

"It started last year," says Broria, who lives on Tamar Street in West Carmel. "We realized that there were aphids on the tree, but after a short period the leaves fell off and we thought that was the end. Then we realized that the tree itself was probably sick and again it was filled with aphids. The tree is right next to our windows, although it is in the garden of one of the neighboring houses. A situation has arisen where we cannot deal with the problem, but have to ask for help from the tenants of that building.
Our blinds are always closed because we are afraid that the aphids will enter the houses. Our windows are full of aphids. There is only one part of the house, the part facing the Wadi, where you can open a window without fear. Every ten days I wash the window and the blind from the outside. I'm really afraid it will enter my house. In our building the common space was filled with aphids. The aphid is like glue, like lice that spread everywhere. At first I didn't understand at all what it was about, now I'm getting the hang of it."
Broria, as mentioned, is not the only one suffering from the disturbing phenomenon. Following a post she wrote on Facebook, she received many responses from residents across the city facing the same problem. The deputy mayor, Sharit Golan Steinberg, even turned to her and promised to look into the possibilities for solving the situation.
"Even before that, I contacted the municipality several times. And there they told me that they take care of trees that are in public areas, but in such cases they are prevented from taking care of them, because it is a tree that is on private property, so I should contact the tenants of that building, because the responsibility to take care of the tree is theirs. It turns out that A phenomenon that exists in the city, trees with aphids. I don't know if it could bring diseases, I would expect the municipal veterinarian to come and tell us what to do, after all, we are residents of this city."
It should be noted that aphids are a common phenomenon and can be found on many streets in Haifa and in general. There are cases where the aphids take over very tall trees, which makes it difficult to carry out pest control and get rid of them. In other cases, pest control is carried out which does eliminate the aphids, but after a while they return and take over.
An aphid is an insect from the family of bedbugs. Under this name there are many species, with about 400 species of aphids in Israel alone. The website of the Ministry of Agriculture states:
