The hotel located on the Carmel Ridge overlooking the spectacular view of Haifa Bay, is the first luxury hotel built in modern Haifa, located at 85-87 Hanasi St.
Dan Carmel Hotel
Dan Carmel, a 5-star hospitality hotel, is a 14-story building that includes 220 rooms, a swimming pool, a well-kept garden and a luxurious restaurant - the "Rondo" - under which the "Louis" promenade passes.
The hotel and restaurant were built according to the plans of the veteran Haifa architect Shmuel Rosov. The cornerstone was laid in 1961 and the hotel was inaugurated in 1963.
The establishment of the hotel was accompanied by a public and professional debate on the issue of "Is it appropriate to break the ridge line of the Carmel by building a tall structure" as the hotel structure.
The debate was finally decided by reality, first with the construction of the "Nof" hotel near Dan Carmel, and then with the construction of the "Panorama Towers", the "Twins" of Haifa. And the Dan Carmel building is not alone on the ridge line, the new ridge line is emerging.
Dan hotel chain
"Dan Hotels" is the oldest chain in Israel. It began its journey in 1947, when the brothers Yekutiel and Shmuel Federman purchased a small 21-room boarding house on Yarakon Street in Tel Aviv and named it "Keta". The Pederman brothers predicted that Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city, would become a leading tourist destination in the region. A few years later the small boarding house became the first "Dan" hotel.
Today, the "Dan Hotels" chain controls 17 hotels in Israel and it also includes the "King David" hotel in Jerusalem and a hotel in Bangalore, India.
Federman business, from hotels to newspapers
The Federman family is the controlling owner of the "Dan Hotels" chain and "Elbit Systems". The family's worth is estimated at about 6 billion dollars. As mentioned, the brothers Yekutiel and Shmuel Federman began their business careers 77 years ago in a small boarding house on Yarakon Street that later became the first "Dan" hotel. The Dan hotel chain, the oldest in Israel, includes hotels in all major cities in Israel, from Haifa to Eilat, and also in India, in the city of Bangalore.
In 1998, members of the Pederman family of the second generation entered "Elbit Systems" as controlling owners, which deals with the development and production of combat systems, including anti-aircraft missiles. "Elbit Systems" is among the most successful companies operating in Israel.
Shmuel Rosov, architect Dan Carmel.
Shmuel Rozov (1900-1975), was born in Saint Petersburg, the capital of Czarist Russia. In 1917, the year of the Bolshevik Revolution, he went to study in London and qualified there as a civil engineer and architect. In 1924 he immigrated to Israel and started working for the electric company. In 1930 he opened an independent planning office and was later joined by his son, Ari Rozov. In the 60s he was a member of the planning team of the outline plan of Haifa.
Among his outstanding works, apart from the Dan Carmel Hotel, are:
- Naharim power station
- Beit Pinchas Rotenberg, "Hazaken Menharim" (not far from the Dan Carmel hotel)
- Palace Cinema on Hanaviyim Street (the Palace Tower was built in its place)
- Beit Egged in the former central Egged station in Bat Galim (together with Aryeh Sharon, Benjamin Idelson, Aryeh Freiberger).
The Haifa City Council named a street after Rosov in the Check Post area.
A celeb hotel
Among the famous guests who stayed at Dan Carmel are the actors Richard Burton and his wife Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren. The singer Mike Burnett, just before his dizzying success in France, appeared regularly at the Rondo restaurant. Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion rested here on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat held a historic press conference here with the participation of then President Yitzhak Navon and Prime Minister Begin. The architect Oscar Niemeyer - the planner of Haifa University - lived in the hotel for almost a year, planned many projects in his suite, none of which came to fruition.
Dear readers,
The articles in this section are based on open information published in sources such as Wikipedia and other websites and may include various historical inaccuracies arising from the aforementioned sources.
The villa of Yekoyel Federman's house is still on Derech Hayam St. At the time, all the film actors of the movie Exodus, part of which was filmed in Haifa, stayed at the hotel.
thank you for your response. It is indeed mentioned that a lot of celebs were hosted at Dan Karmach, but I didn't know the "Exodus" players.
old hotel
thank you for your response. It's not a disadvantage that he sleeps, sometimes it's an advantage.
It is also important to mention the engineer of the building of the hotel...Yair Rinkov. An engineer and a person of the highest caliber who participated in the construction of countless projects of Solel Bona in Israel and abroad.
Thanks for your comment, it's really important.
My honeymoon August 1967 Dan Carmel Hotel Haifa 14th floor
A hotel so outdated, it's hard to define it as luxury. Externally it looks like it is from the 70's, maybe some construction clearance could benefit it.
Always wonderful illustrations!
And enlightening articles!
Dear Dr. David Bar On
Cheers to a huge NIS!
Thank you very much for your comment, Rachel, have a good week!
Dan Carmel has 10 floors and not 14 as it says.
thank you for your response. The hotel has 10 floors of rooms and 4 floors of bathrooms.
The boarding house belonged to Ms. Yakit: Kata Dan
And hence the Dan Hotel
Rosov was the godfather at my circumcision. An amazing man.
from the founders of Haifa.
There are none today.
Thank you for your response, Samson, indeed I remember that you already mentioned this in a response to one of the articles in which Rosov is mentioned. This is probably a virtue for longevity...all the best!
Dr. Bar On.
It's great to have your section that shines a spotlight every week on an important building in Haifa that is a landmark, gives food for thought - positive and negative and creates a conversation and sometimes a storm of spirits.
I have a problem with your drawings that are too rough for my taste and miss building details and other subtleties that make the building. God is in the details, someone said.
For example, at the Dan Hotel, Mr. Rozov successfully dealt with a huge planar facade that could have been at the end of a boring planar plan.
The creative rozov gave depth to the balconies in the front, but this is not shown in the illustration.
In the balconies, he designed subtle details that catch the eye in their repetition, such as: a genius handrail in Pashto, all of its uniqueness is in a "zigzag" line - 2 protrusions on each balcony, a round and simple light fixture on the side wall of each balcony - it also does not appear in the illustration. The facade of Rosov is flat - but plastic and fascinating.
In your illustration the front is checkered and boring - exactly what he was trying to prevent.
An integral part of the hotel's composition in the space is the interface with the next street expressed in the beautiful stepped development with an emphasis on horizontal lines in front of the hotel, a development that combines waterfalls and pools and hides the car access road to the hotel entrance. By cutting off the illustration and leaving the development out, you did the hotel an injustice.
In general, I would try pencil drawings. But as mentioned, it's a matter of taste.
thank you for your response. There is a difference between a drawing and an architectural drawing. But as you yourself said - "on taste and smell..."
Dr. Blumenfeld, thanks for the detail, I just wanted to write down these things and more. Indeed, the elements that repeat themselves in the building (the pyramids in the balustrade and the marble covering, the squares, etc.) create a "design glue" that unites the building. I am happy to live in a building designed by Rozov. An illustration I made some time ago, as a homage to his work.
Federman also built the Baba Hillel Silver train buildings.
Water reporter??! These are acronyms for unmanned aerial vehicle. That is, as UFOs. Journalists must be careful with correct spelling!
Thanks for your response, but I don't see where we went wrong...
Because of the hotel prices…..it is better to vacation in the sand and stay living in the sand
The Dan Carmel Hotel was designed long before 1980 - the year of the Holot TAMA 38.
It is surprising that the municipality does not promote a TMA 38 plan for the famous hotel building. The local committee engineer known for his false statements regarding the application of TMA 38 to any "honey concrete" building from before 1980 must also approve the Dan Hotel building for demolition and "urban renewal" as who approved all the TMAs in Carmel with a lie and lie in the last 20 years.
It's time for heroism - it's time for him to leave his shameful and destructive role.
I own a honey concrete building in Hadar Carmel. The junk was not ready to approve.
There are things that are not touched, because they constitute history and a landmark in the development of the place. in any field. Just like you wouldn't destroy the first Ford T saved, just because it doesn't have seat belts...
Shmuel Rozov designed the building at 139 Hanasi Boulevard in the center of Carmel. The first apartment building in Carmel with an elevator.
The man designed dozens of prominent buildings in Hadar and Carmel - the city council named a street after him in Check Post.
But Givat Zemer is full of names of singers who happened to be born in Haifa and for decades did not live, sing or act in the city.
thank you for your response. Yes, the Haifa City Council to pay respects... just as it named the street behind Talpiot Market after Imber, who writes the words "Hatikva"!!
